Cell phone usage while driving is a very common trend around the US. Cell phones are a part of everyday life in today’s world. Cell phones allow people to multitask, doing many other things while still on their phone. Although individuals are able to multitask, driving is one task that requires ones full attention. Cell phone usage raises many risks while driving. Those who use a cell phone while driving risk their life, the lives of others, and could be breaking the law. Cell phones shouldn’t be used while driving because it jeopardizes one’s life and well-being. Cell phones are a big distraction. When looking at a phone, ones focus is no longer on the road. It is then easier for one to become unaware of what could be ahead of them. The latest status update or text message isn’t as important as a person’s life, it can always wait. It will be there when one has reached their destination. Most don’t think that just five seconds could change one’s life, forever. The thought of closing one’s eyes and counting to five while driving should scare a person. An even scarier thought is to think that everyday a big percent of people do while looking at their cell phone. In those five seconds of looking at a phone a person could run off the road, run into a tree, or hit an animal, the possibilities are endless. That is a risk no person should take.
Using a cell phone while driving doesn’t only risk one’s own life, it also puts other lives at risk as well. If one is looking at their phone instead of the road they could be risking other’s lives in many different ways. Such as, missing an upcoming pedestrian that could be walking or riding a bike, missing a stop sign, or stop light, risking the chance of hitting another vehicle. Or, if someone were in the car with a person who is driving and using their cell phone, their life is then in danger as well.
