Cellulitis is a bacterial infection that affects the skin and the tissue underneath the skin. Although cellulitis can be caused by many types of bacteria, streptococcus and staphylococcus are the main bacteria that cause this condition. Cellulitis often develops near surgical wounds or ulcers. This condition causes the skin to become reddened and swollen. It also causes the area to feel tender and hot. Cellulitis can quickly spread to other areas of the body. It is not contagious.

Cellulitis can affect any area of the body, but it typically develops on the lower legs. People who are obese may develop cellulitis on their abdomen. It can also affect the eye socket, anus area, chest, cheek or face. Cellulitis may only affect the surface of the

Erysipelas is a bacterial infection in the upper layer of the skin. It is most similar with another skin infection called Cellulitis. Erysipelas is usually caused by group A Streptococcus and most often occurs on the face and legs. Erysipelas can also be caused by a cut in the skin, problems with drainage through the lymphatic system, or skin ulcers. Erysipelas can affect both children and adults. A few symptoms of Erysipelas are fever, chills, red, swollen, and painful area of skin with a raised edge, or blisters on the affected area. Erysipelas occurs when Group A Streptococcus bacteria penetrates the outer barrier of your skin. Group A Streptococcus bacteria normally live on your skin and other surfaces harmless. This disease affects the skin and mucous membranes, in which the layers of the skin start to peel away and separate, due to cell death. While medication reactions are the most common reason for onset, it can also occur in response to some preexisting bacterial infections. Symptoms for SJS can start off being flu-like, with a fever and a possible mild epidermal rash that can then quickly turn into severe blistering that causes the skin to be easily sloughed off. Once SJS has affected a certain amount of skin, it may then be diagnosed as Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome (TENS). In medical literature, SJS and TENS are the same disease, at varying levels of intensity (Foster, Foster & Foster, 2011).…

What is Necrotizing Fasciitis? Necrotizing Fasciitis is a horrible disease that affects the skin and soft tissue beneath it. It is a disease of the skin and surrounding tissue. It is contagious, and it is potentially deadly. Necrotizing Fasciitis is a severe complication of group A streptococcal infection. The bacteria have been known to be flesh-eating bacteria. However, researchers show that the bacteria do not actually “eat” the tissue. They cause the destruction of skin and muscle by releasing toxins, which include streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins. It is a rare bacterial infection that invades the skin and tissues under the skin. (Asttrino 1). The tissues die rapidly, so it is important for doctors to catch it early. This disease increases sensitivity, releases toxins, increases the permeability of the vessels, inhibits blood supply. There are several stages of necrotizing fasciitis. Normally people who get necrotizing fasciitis have a weak immune system, have chronic health problems, have cuts or surgical wounds, had chicken pox recently, or use steroid medicines. There are three types of necrotizing fasciitis. Type A is polymicrobial, type B is, Group A Streptococcal, and type C is gas gangrene. The most common type is type B (Asttrino 1).…

Another type of microorganism that may cause infections in the oral cavity is bacteria. Bacteria are known to cause actinomycosis and aphthous ulcers. Actinomysosis is usually derived from poor dental hygiene or microorganisms making their way in through the dental socket after tooth removal. With actinomycosis there is painful swelling followed by discharge of pus and yellow granules. Like actinomycosis, aphthous ulcers can also be painful. Many people know them as canker sores. These are not contagious, but the recurrence of these painful ulcers is usually due to heredity, trauma, stress, food allergens, and hormonal changes. Aphthous ulcers appear as circular lesions with yellow centers and a red “halo” surrounding the lesion. It is best to reschedule patients in these cases because of the discomfort these infections bring about.…
