LIFEGUARDS
Welcome to the Chabot Swim Club Lifeguard Staff.
Splat! There’s some zinc/oxide on your nose. Now you are official.
Below are a few of the rules and guidelines you will need to follow and enforce. Please use good judgment when enforcing pool rules and if there is ever a question, contact a board member. Phone numbers of the board members are posted in the lifeguard room.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. It is your duty to report to work on time, dressed and ready to work. 2. You are responsible for the safety and well being of all club members and their guests. 3. You are responsible for enforcing/reminding everyone about the rules of …show more content…
the swim club. 4. You are responsible for performing the opening duties, closing duties, unassigned guard duties, and lifeguard room duties when you are in these positions or shifts. 5. You are responsible for opening and closing the pool and maintaining the cleanliness of the facility. 6. You are responsible for identifying dangerous situations and taking steps to protect the club members and their guests.
THE JOB!
The following is a list of guidelines, expectations, procedures and responsibilities for all lifeguards. Head Lifeguard and Senior Lifeguard responsibilities are also included in this list.
VISITORS
In general lifeguards shall have NO visitors while on duty. You can hang with your homies at other times.
TIME CARDS
Make sure that you always punch in when you arrive to work your shift and punch out when your shift has ended. It is your responsibility to keep track of the time you work. If there are any problems make sure that you talk to the Senior Lifeguard on duty so that they can report the problem to a Head Lifeguard. Errors and correction to time cards require approval and initials from a Head Lifeguard.
PAY
I know it’s fun but you also get paid!
Lifeguards are paid every two weeks. A folder for each lifeguard is kept in the lifeguard room. Your timecards are kept here and your paycheck will be placed here for you to pick up.
Lifeguards at the Chabot Swim Club are paid as follows: 1. All lifeguards are paid by the hour. 2. Lifeguard pay starts at $8.00 an hour. 3. For each additional year, lifeguards are paid an additional $1.00 ($0.75 until this years) per hour. 4. If you are asked to work more than 8 hours in one day, you will be paid time and a half for any time over 8 hours. 5. If you work on the following holidays you will be paid time and a half: • Easter • Memorial Day • 4th of July • Labor Day
Breaks
Florida state law requires you to take an unpaid meal break if your work shift is more than 6 hours. Meal break are 30 minutes long and you will need to punch out and then back in when your meal break is over. Meal breaks need to be coordinated with the Senior Lifeguard to make sure there is adequate lifeguard coverage. During a meal break you may leave the club grounds.
Florida state law also entitles you to a 10 minute paid rest break for every four hours of work. You may choose whether you would like to take a rest break or not. Rest breaks need to be coordinated with the Senior Lifeguard to make sure there is adequate lifeguard coverage. During a rest break you may not leave the club grounds.
ATTITUDE
Be happy, positive and helpful. Profanity is never acceptable.
UNIFORM
The uniform is a shirt, red or blue shorts, a whistle, and a hat when needed.
When cold, a sweatshirt and sweatpants are okay. No tight clothes. (If you are not dressed appropriately, you will be sent home.)
No No’s
The following things will not be tolerated and could end up in you losing your job as a lifeguard: 1.
Not showing up for work. Being late is one thing, not showing up is another. The first time you will get written up, the second time we will find someone else to fill your position. 2. Falsifying your timecard by: • punching in and then leaving • leaving and then punching out later. • punching in or out using someone else’s timecard (you should question the “friendship” of anyone who asks you to do this). • modifying time clock punches (if you need to correct a punch have a head lifeguard make the change and initial it). 3. Failing to perform opening, closing and unassigned guard tasks. 4. Insubordination to the head lifeguards (Garrett and Meghan), the lifeguard coordinator (Gary) or a swim club board member who is acting in their role as a board member. 5. Failing to keep your Lifeguard and CPR certifications current.
WATCHING THE POOL
(See the chair position diagram) 1. One lifeguard is ALWAYS in the “High Chair” during open swim. The only exception to this is if there are only small children in pool at the shallow end in which case the guard may choose to sit in one of the “Side Chair” or “Shallow End” …show more content…
positions. 2. When approximately 25 swimmers are in the pool, a second lifeguard will be assigned to watch the pool from one of the Side Chair positions. 3. When the number of swimmers in the pool exceeds 35, a third lifeguard will assigned to watch the pool from the other “Side Chair” or the “Shallow End” position. 4. Lifeguards are rotated to another assignment every 15 minutes when only one guard is watching the pool and every 10 minutes when two or more guards are watching the pool. The guard in the “High Chair” should be switched first. The guard leaving the “High Chair” then switches into his/her new position and so on. Do not switch all the guards at the exact same time as this will lead to a few moments of confusion over who is watching the pool. 5. When switching guards in any position, the new guard must stand next to the guard being replaced and watch the pool while the other exits the chair. The exiting guard then watches the pool while the new guard gets situated in the chair. The new guard in the chair must then verbally acknowledge they are ready to take over. At this point responsibility has transferred and the exiting guard can move to their new assignment. 6. All lifeguards watching the pool must have tube in lap, slack gathered in hand, harness around the neck and shoulder. 7. Members and guests should haven no conversations with the lifeguards watching the pool (“talk to the hand”) unless the issue is directly related to something going on in the pool. Non-pool related issues must be handled by the lifeguard in the lifeguard room or the unassigned lifeguard. 8. Lifeguards assigned to watch the pool need to scan the whole pool at all times. Pay attention to swimmers entering or exiting the pool at the stairs and ladders. The lifeguard in the “High Chair” needs to watch swimmers using the diving board. 9. If there’s glare on the water wear sunglasses. 10. Never allow swimmers in the water if the pool covers are partially on. The covers should be all off during swimming hours. 11. No food while watching the pool. A water bottle is acceptable.

POOL DISCIPLINE
All Lifeguards must consistently enforce all pool rules.
Please see the club rules for details.
If discipline is needed follow these guidelines: 1. Children and Teenagers: A. Talk to them first, explain what they have done wrong and what pool rule they have broken. B. If the child/teenager ignores the lifeguard or continues to break the rule they can be “benched”. “Benching” is a timeout where the “benchee” is required to sit out of the pool, in a specified location for 5 – 10 minutes or until the lifeguard determines that they can return to the pool. C. If the child/teenager continues to break rules, ignores the lifeguard or generally disregards what the lifeguard is saying, removal from pool or club is warranted. Notify the Senior Lifeguard on duty and the child/teenager’s parents of the issue/problem. Ask the child/teenager to call their parents if a parent is not present. Have their parent come pick them up if they are under 16. If they are over 16 just ask them to leave. D. If a teenager 16 or older disregards requests to leave call or talk to their parent if they are present, or call a Board Member. E. As a last resort and only if you ever feel you are in physical danger call 911. 2. ADULTS: A. Talk them first and remind them of the pool rule or the safety issue/problem you noticed. B. If the adult refuses to comply with your request, notify the Senior Lifeguard on duty and nicely ask them to leave the club. C. If any pool member refuses to leave the pool after you have notified the Senior Lifeguard and asked the member to leave, contact a Board Member immediately. D. As a last resort and only if you ever feel you are in physical danger call 911.
ABSOLUTLY NEVER TOUCH POOL MEMBERS UNLESS YOU ARE DEFENDING YOURSELF FROM PHYSICAL VIOLENCE.
WHISTLE
The whistle should be use to alert swimmers that a pool rule is being violated 1. 1 blow = alert swimmer 2. 2 blows = Problem, guard leaving the chair 3. 3 blows = Emergency
WHISTLE FOR EMERGENCIES
Three blows on the whistle is used for emergency situations. The lifeguard discovering the emergency should immediately blow the whistle three times. 1. When you hear three blows on the whistle the lifeguards should clear the pool. 2. When you hear three blows on the whistle all lifeguards should immediately go to the edge of the pool and scan the pool looking for anyone in danger or having problems of any kind. 3. Follow the Emergency Procedures.
THE SCOOP ON POOP
There will be times when fecal material is discovered in the pool. When this is brought to the attention of the lifeguards take the following steps: 1. Clear the pool. 2. Use the pool net to remove the offending material. 3. If inspection determines that the object is not poop resume normal pool operations. 4. If it is poop: • Call Kevin at Aquablue and inform him of the discovery. • The pool is to be closed to swimming for 24 hours after Aquablue treats the pool.
• Post a “pool closed” sign on the window at the gate entrance. • Contact a head lifeguard. • Contact a board member.
ATTENDENCE/PUNCTUALITY
As an employee it is your responsibility to be on time for work; it is not the responsibility of your parents (they don’t work here). Time cards will be checked regularly to verify that lifeguards are arriving at work on time. This includes the Head Lifeguards and Senior Lifeguards. Being late for work will have an impact on the number of hours that you will be scheduled to work. Chronic lateness can / will result in being written up, being placed on probation, not being asked to return next season or possibly having your employment terminated. So don’t be late, get there early.
ADULT SWIM TIME/LIFEGUARD BREAKS
There are three reasons for “Adult Swim”. First is to give adults a chance to swim in the pool without the company of children. Second is to give the lifeguards a “Break”. The third reason for Adult Swim is to provide breaks for the kids and reduce the general level of uproar that can build over time in the pool.
Adult Swim times are at 2:00 PM., 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Adult Swim will last for 20
minutes.
Note: Being a lifeguard does not make you an adult. Being 18 or older makes you an adult.
WORK SCHEDULING
The weekly lifeguard work schedule will be done 2 weeks in advance. It is your responsibility to provide the Head Lifeguards with your availability so that the work schedule can be done. If you do not provide the information, you will not be scheduled to work. There are also other reasons why you may not be scheduled for as many hours as other lifeguards. Here are some examples: 1. You are a first year lifeguard 2. You have not been coming to work on time (A board member will speak to you about this) 3. You have not been performing your regular duties while at work (A board member will speak to you about this) 4. You have not been meeting the “Off Duty” lifeguard expectations (A board member will speak to you about this) 5. You have been having “Regular” emergencies that require changing the schedule (A board member will speak to you about this)
There are other reasons that you may not be scheduled. If you have any issues with the hours you are scheduled please talk to the Head Lifeguards. If you still have questions contact a board member.
If an emergency comes up and you cannot work, contact the Head Lifeguard, and Senior Lifeguard or the other Lifeguards you were scheduled to be working with immediately.
TRADING HOURS
You must always notify the Head Lifeguard 24 hours in advance of trading hours with another lifeguard. If you are trading hours with someone, you and the person you are trading with must notify the Head Lifeguard, and update the schedule posted in the lifeguard room. When updating the schedule, line out the name of the person being replaced and write in the name of the person taking the shift. Both parties should put their initials next to the change.
OFF DUTY LIFEGUARD EXPECTATIONS
All off duty lifeguards using the pool as members or guests are expected to follow the same rules as any member of the club. There are no exceptions. We expect lifeguards to set an example for young pool members on and off duty.
HEAD LIFEGUARDS
The Head Lifeguards have some additional duties that other lifeguards do not have. The following is a list of additional duties that the Head Lifeguards have: 1. Making the weekly lifeguard work schedule 2. Handling all schedule trades when they occur 3. Manage all bathroom, cleaning and general pool supplies. Provide a list of items that need to be purchased before they run out. 4. Contact point for any and all safety and maintenance issues or problems 5. Scheduling and staffing Lifeguards for parties 6. Calculating and summarizing the hours worked per day, per guard after the last Saturday of the pay period. 7. Serving as a primary contact and authority after a pool emergency. 8. Organizing practices or sessions for the lifeguards to hone their rescue/first aid skills. 9. Collaborating with the Board with new lifeguard hiring.
A Head Lifeguard is expected to set an example for the lifeguards they are working with. The Head Lifeguards are also available for any lifeguard to go to when they have questions about the job.
SENIOR LIFEGUARD
A Senior Lifeguard is a lifeguard who has 2 or more years experience. The Senior Lifeguards are expected to set an example for the lifeguards they are working with and be available for questions from the first and second year guards. There are a few specific additional duties that we expect the Senior Lifeguards to perform: 1. The Senior Lifeguards are responsible for the number of lifeguards that need to be on duty or are on duty. The Senior Lifeguards have the responsibility to determine the number of lifeguards that are needed under the given circumstances. If the Senior Lifeguard realizes that the pool is becoming very crowded it is their responsibility to contact a Head Lifeguard and request additional assistance. Likewise, if there are very few people at the pool it is the responsibility of the Senior Lifeguard to send one of the lifeguards home. There should always be at least 2 lifeguards on duty when the pool is open. 2. The board expects the Senior Lifeguards to determine when to close the pool due to any safety situation that requires closure. It is also up to the Senior Lifeguard to decide to close the pool based on weather conditions (severe cold, rain, snow, sleet, hail lightning or thunder) or lack of pool usage after 7:00 PM. 3. The board allows the pool hours to be extended to 9:30 PM if a board member requests this from the Senior Lifeguard and if lifeguard coverage can be provided.
INJURIES
Please document any injuries that occur in the Daily Incident Report, no matter how small.
PROBLEM ESCALATION
If you ever have any problems that are not safety related or emergencies please follow the process below: 1. Notify the Senior Lifeguard you are on duty with 2. Notify a Head Lifeguard 3. Call a board member
Phone numbers for the Head Lifeguards and the board members will be posted in the office.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
If you have any issues in this area come up, contact a board member you feel comfortable with immediately. Sexual Harassment includes any kind of unwanted touching, leering, innuendos, discussion or jokes of a sexual nature. If you feel you have been subjected to sexual harassment, you are not responsible for confronting the offender (unless you want to, in which case let them know that their behavior is not acceptable). If any kind of sexual harassment is reported it is the responsibility of the board to take action and deal with it.
PAY PHONE
The pay phone is for use by all members of the pool. Only lifeguards should answer the phone. Answer by saying: “Chabot Swim Club, may I help you?”
CELL PHONES
Lifeguards who have cell phones should not be making personal phone calls while on duty. Also they should not be answering their cell phones while in the lifeguard chairs. If you have a cell phone leave it in the office while on duty. The one exception to this is that the lifeguard on duty in the lifeguard room may use a cell phone to confirm party guests with members who are already present at the club.
CONTACTING BOARD MEMBERS
Please feel free to contact board members anytime with any issue you think is important. If it is an emergency or critical issue start at the top and keep calling numbers until you get a hold of a board member. If it’s a non-critical issue related to a specific area of responsibility call the board member responsible for that area and leave a message and a phone number where you can be contacted.
The board member names and their phone numbers are posted in the lifeguard room.
