LIFEGUARDS

Welcome to the Chabot Swim Club Lifeguard Staff.

Splat! There’s some zinc/oxide on your nose. Now you are official.

Below are a few of the rules and guidelines you will need to follow and enforce. Please use good judgment when enforcing pool rules and if there is ever a question, contact a board member. Phone numbers of the board members are posted in the lifeguard room.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. It is your duty to report to work on time, dressed and ready to work. 2. You are responsible for the safety and well being of all club members and their guests. 3. You are responsible for enforcing/reminding everyone about the rules of

Not showing up for work. Being late is one thing, not showing up is another. The first time you will get written up, the second time we will find someone else to fill your position. 2. Falsifying your timecard by: • punching in and then leaving • leaving and then punching out later. • punching in or out using someone else’s timecard (you should question the “friendship” of anyone who asks you to do this). • modifying time clock punches (if you need to correct a punch have a head lifeguard make the change and initial it). 3. Failing to perform opening, closing and unassigned guard tasks. 4. Insubordination to the head lifeguards (Garrett and Meghan), the lifeguard coordinator (Gary) or a swim club board member who is acting in their role as a board member. 5. Failing to keep your Lifeguard and CPR certifications current.

WATCHING THE POOL

(See the chair position diagram) 1. One lifeguard is ALWAYS in the “High Chair” during open swim. The only exception to this is if there are only small children in pool at the shallow end in which case the guard may choose to sit in one of the “Side Chair” or “Shallow End”

• Post a “pool closed” sign on the window at the gate entrance. • Contact a head lifeguard. • Contact a board member.

ATTENDENCE/PUNCTUALITY
As an employee it is your responsibility to be on time for work; it is not the responsibility of your parents (they don’t work here). Time cards will be checked regularly to verify that lifeguards are arriving at work on time. This includes the Head Lifeguards and Senior Lifeguards. Being late for work will have an impact on the number of hours that you will be scheduled to work. Chronic lateness can / will result in being written up, being placed on probation, not being asked to return next season or possibly having your employment terminated. So don’t be late, get there early.

ADULT SWIM TIME/LIFEGUARD BREAKS
There are three reasons for “Adult Swim”. First is to give adults a chance to swim in the pool without the company of children. Second is to give the lifeguards a “Break”. The third reason for Adult Swim is to provide breaks for the kids and reduce the general level of uproar that can build over time in the pool.

Adult Swim times are at 2:00 PM., 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Adult Swim will last for 20

For three summers I didn’t come home from my summer job smelling like grease from the local café or fresh cut mowed lawns, but I came home smelling like chlorine and tanning oil. I spent my days in a high lifeguard stand, towering over bathers enforcing rules and watching for drowning victims. I slathered on the tanning oil to get the perfect deep brown tan, and occasionally lifted my polarized sunglasses to double-check the patrons. It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it.…

Today I was task with writing an essay on the importance of being on time at your place of duty. I thought about what I could write about and this is what I came up with. It made me think back to one of my seven army values; Duty. What is my duty? It is my duty to show up at my station of assignment on time if not even a little early. Reasons for this would be that the NCO would know that all personnel are present and ready for the day.…

Many parents control what their children watch on television, tending to block programs that are inappropriate and disturbing to the child. But do these parents bother to educate themselves on the background of these “inappropriate” shows? I know that when I was a child my mother had just about every show on Adult Swim blocked because of vulgar language and hurtful jokes. For example, Family Guy’s humor could be constructed as offensive (Peacocke, 306) but its intentions are much more beneficial. Antonia…
