Chains By Madam Lockton Analysis
Chains is a good book title for a book like this because during the time set of the book was set in slaves were very popular. It’s a good title because the story is about a slave girl who is sold to an awful woman by the name of Madam Lockton and it seems as if Isabel the slave girl is chained to a never ending prison. A quote that is used to describe that Isabel is chained to slavery is, “‘The toothless sailor approached us again and pointed down to the dock where the crates and casks stamped LOCKTON & FOOTE were being stacked. “that’s where you belong” (27). This represents that the Locktons are quite the traders and have a lot of money and power. Another way the title “‘Chains”’ is significant is that the slavery she is put in chains her
to the wall of slavery and prevents her from being free to fly away into the open vast world. The title Chains is also used to describe the pain and memories of Isabel’s past and how free she was back home in Rhode Island.
