Dallas Armstrong, 63 yrs. old
October 2nd, over the phone interview
• Question 1: How do you view dance?
Mr. Armstrong: Dance is.., something people get together to do as a hobby. Some people people dance for a variety of different reason.
Me: Why do you dance?
Mr. Armstrong: I dance to bring laughter to my friends and the people around me. Dance has a way of brightening up someones day. Yeah, it’s for exercise but it’s also to show self expression.
I love to dance. I couldn’t imagine life without it.
• Question 2: What was your favorite part of dancing when you were young?
Mr. Armstrong: My favorite part of dancing was the spectators. If you do a good move, you know everybody would give you props. So coming up as a young guy in my neighborhood I would always want to be the one to learn all the moves, and be the first one to master them.
Basically, I was known as the dude that can get down on the dance floor. Just a fun hobby, to be honest. Me: Were the spectators Caucasian or African American?
Mr. Armstrong: Black spectators because that’s who I was around but I do know for a fact that we had a huge influence on how the world started to dance around the 60’s.
• Question 3: How do you think dance has changed as you’ve grown up?
Mr. Armstrong: Dance hasn’t changed as much as far as the music. But as far as the dances.. of course!! They are wayyy more sexual and more intimate!
Me: Really?
Mr. Armstrong: Yes. If you listen to the music now, in some way it relates back to our music.
The heavy bass and smoothness of our music has almost been adopted by the new generations.
For the most part dance is eternal they just have a lil’ twist to them.
• Question 4: Do you have any new favorite artist, say.. Justin Bieber?
Mr. Armstrong: Not really. He’s ok I guess, but my all-time favorite would be James Brown.
