After the French Revolutionary War, people began to view the criminal justice system as a tool to oppress the working classes by the leaders in society, upholding the status quo, and the enforcement of order in society. People began to campaign for a fair and equally administered justice system, that was equally applicable to everyone in society, as it was previously seen as a tool used to uphold the leader’s power in society. After the revolutionary war, rehabilitation was a focus rather than punishment, as punishment had no deterrent and was not productive in the long term in reducing crime rates, there had to be a societal shift, in making a more equal society with opportunities for everyone outside of crime. In Europe, countries began to industrialise to compete with the growing sector in the UK. This lead to the same strains we faced in large towns in the UK, due to the increasing population of people moving into cities, leading to the same pressures faced by UK cities, as peoples personal economic situations began to decline, people began to understand the causes of crime, and the answer on how to deal with it. The reduction in violent punishments to deal with crime, which were proved to be inadequate, this lead to the phasing out of the Bloody Code, which was used to punish for crimes such as theft, as the economic situation continued to get worse, more people were being arrested and charged with crimes, and this was their sentence, but due to the increasing demand for the death penalty, those waiting to receive their punishment became longer, and the system couldn’t keep up with the high demand for such petty crimes, and people’s opposition to these
