Background of the Study
Social networking websites, the so called SNS, are the online services for people who want social relations to other people around world.Social networks have been widely used by college students nowadays and Facebook is the most commonly used social network. Research by Power (2009) andRouis (2011)presented that on using Facebook, there are positive and negative effects on the academic performance of the students who are using it. Lusk (2010) stated that the positive aspect of online communities (such as Facebook) is that youth can utilize them for academic performance and support. Students can also develop their online communication skills and knowledge through social media as Brydolf (2007) says, “Students who may be reluctant to speak up in class are participating in book discussion blogs and writing for real audiences. There are new Web tools emerging all the time that are enhancing learning”.
On contrary, a study on Ohio State University and TheOpenUniversity of Netherlands (Kirschner,&Karpinski, 2009)reveals that as to the relationship between social media and grades, college students who utilize Facebook spend less time on studying and have lower grades than students who do not use popular networking sites (such as facebook). According also to Dela Peña (2012), Facebook addiction contributes negative impact on Filipino students. Using Facebook has now become a trend to students. With the contradicting statements presented by late studies about the effects of Facebook to the academic performance of the students, the researchers will conduct this study to know if what are really the effects of
