She balances my sense of responsibility with her fathers crazy, outgoing silliness. This usually means that she starts off shy before breaking out of her shell to show her true fun-loving self. While she is always the first one of her siblings ready for school every morning and always has her homework done before I ever get the chance to tell her to do it, she spends every ounce of her spare time goofing off with her sisters. Whether it is rolling around on the floor, chasing small children through the house, or giving them piggyback rides out of the kitchen so that I can make dinner without tripping over them. The one thing she is always sure to make time for is lending a hand if someone is in need. I cannot count the times that she has offered to make lunch or dinner (usually PB&J sandwiches or, more recently, top ramen) for herself and her sisters because she can see that I have a migraine. I remember dozing off an the couch one day, trying to make my head stop hurting, and waking up to my girls eating and a sandwich with my name on it. If it is not another student wanting to say hi, it is a teacher or faculty member wanting to tell me what a good student Elena is and that they wish more students were like her. Elena's class recently had to transition from one teacher to another in, right in the middle of the school year. The majority of her class reacted by giving the new teacher a hard time. Doing everything from ignoring the teacher to being disruptive. The first week with the new teacher was the worst but after the disciplinary councilor came to the class and asked why the rest of them were not handling this more like Elena was, the students finally started to calm down. Elena has always set the example, both at school and at home, by doing what she knows is right.
