Character development In the second part of the book Susie is still showing signs of protectiveness, although she is in heaven and cannot do anything about what happens down on earth she still watches over them.” I pushed and pushed against the unyielding borders of my heaven. I wanted to reach out and lift my father up, away, to me”. This quote is showing Susie from above trying to reach out to earth to help warn and protect her father, from being harmed. Susie continues to watch from above as her family struggles with the fact that she is gone and the acceptance to move on. Susie however is still living through her younger sister, Lindsey. As Lindsey starts to fall in love, Susie is feeling the love as well as if she was Lindsey. “ It was lust. I’d never felt it so purely or seen it move so hotly into someone I knew.” This quote is showing that Susie feels the lust that Lindsey is feeling and is happy. Susie's character also starts to show great compassion towards her family in their grief. She feels remorse for her dad and Buckley hopes that they can see her spiritually. …show more content…

Lindsey continues to be the strong one in the family and continues to live her life as nothing has ever happened. Lindsey also begins to try to move on and meet new people who do not know her story. “...but she was hoped to meet a few kids from the surrounding schools who didn't know the story of my death or at least wouldn't connect her to it.” This is showing as if Lindsey wants to forget and move on from her past and start living

The mood of both story lines remains very poignant, with a sense of suspense. Abigail, Susie’s mother, clings to the hope that “Nothing is ever certain” (22, Sebold) after being confronted with horrible news concerning her daughters whereabouts. Having Susie’s parents hold onto the constant hope that their oldest child is still alive, even after multiple pieces of evidence to convince them otherwise, and us knowing the real truth, is what gives the story its poignant feel. The book is almost overbearing with sorrow, knowing each and everybody’s feelings about the situation, while the movie has a very limited point of view. The mood of suspense is present as Susie’s murderer is so close to her family, “My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer” (6, Sebold). Knowing what everyone else doesn’t, the whole story is keeping us on the edge of our seat,…
