Instinct, something we all have, is necessary for survival. As he was being hunted Rainsford’s, the protagonist from “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, primary instinct was to trick General Zaroff, the antagonist who hunts humans, and this instinct saved his life. “...dad’s star might have moved further… playing a solo…” (Dominey, 235). Tatum, the main character in Audition and Subtraction by Amy Fellner Dominy, learned from past experience that playing her instrument cheered her up. When her parents got a divorce, she used this instinct to her advantage and threw herself into her music by playing a solo for district honor band auditions.
