While one may look at Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" and Ernest Hemmingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" and pass them off as basically the same, he should be reminded of the cliché "don't judge a book by its cover." Although both are short stories, each work encompasses a number of elements that are characteristically associated with either commercial or literary fiction. By evaluating the author's use of elements of fiction, such as plot, theme, and characterization, and the literary devices diction, figurative language, and detail, one can come to the conclusion that neither story is better than the other.…

Instinct, something we all have, is necessary for survival. If we did not have instinct, we wouldn’t have learned anything and wouldn’t know what to do if there ever was a crisis. “I’ll give him a trail to follow…” (Connell, 11). As he was being hunted Rainsford’s, the protagonist from “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, primary instinct was to trick General Zaroff, the antagonist who hunts humans, and this instinct saved his life. “...dad’s star might have moved further… playing a solo…” (Dominey, 235). Tatum, the main character in Audition and Subtraction by Amy Fellner Dominy, learned from past experience that playing her instrument cheered her up. When her parents got a divorce, she used this instinct to her advantage and threw herself into her music by playing a solo for district honor band auditions. In the article “Surviving Hurricane Sandy” ,by Lauren Tarshis, “[Ariel Creamer] created a program called Survivor’s Silver Lining… helped numerous kids…” (17). Her instinct was to take her good fortune of surviving and give back to her community. All these people above had used their instinct to their advantage in order to survive, much as you will or have done in times of crisis.…
Patricia Cornwell once said “First of all, it does not deter crime, the death penalty.” So why was it made in the first place? Well, many believe that with this system we can eliminate atrocious criminals such as Timothy McVeigh, a young man who bombed Oklahoma City taking the lives of 168 people, who was later executed. This definitely helps in removing that one criminal, but what about the other thousands? If the death penalty were enforced in Canada then it not only do so but also increase our taxes, put innocent lives at risk, and in all reality have no effect on murder rates. Why would you want to let such a problematic sentencing be legalized in such a fine country like ours.…
