First, the death penalty system could cost millions. Results
from a recent study show that a minimum of 3 executions in the state of California could cost up to 1 million dollars. That sure is a lot of money! But where is this money coming from? Most people think the government has it under control, but that is in fact incorrect. It is you who will pay! Because of how costly this system is, the tax rates will go up in order to have enough money to pay for it. So everyone in the country will be affected by this change. Statistical results in California prove that execution is far more expensive than keeping the criminal in prison. In fact a life in prison without parole is much cheaper, and kinder on your taxes. Keeping them in prison is more effective as it rehabilitates these criminals. Another scientific study done by the National Research Council of the National Academies in America proves that execution does not decrease murder rates, but is actually correlated with it. Also, why spend money on execution when you could use that money to help support the families of the victim through counseling and further development? The death penalty is not just harsh on your money, but also on our lives. Second, execution could put innocent lives at risk. For example let’s say someone guilty of murder was sentenced to death, and a year after execution were found innocent? They were killed for no reason! A sentencing to prison, would at least keep them alive, but with this we would be killing people for no reason in a such. And with terrible lawyers these days, this could get out of hand. I mean put it this way. If someone was shot at the local café, and the gun was left in your backpack and you were sentenced to execution, then what would happen. You would be dead for no worthy reason. Another reason is how racist execution can be. Did you know white criminals are less qualified for the death sentencing than black criminals? Also killing whites is far more expensive than killing a black. I thought our first world minds didn’t support discrimination. Also execution, as mentioned before, could lead to higher murder rates, so in a such life in prison is helping in that way. Last, the death penalty would have no legitimate effect on our murder rates. It was meant as a punishment, and a hopeful warning that no one else would attempt to commit the same crime, but how’s that working out. We still have bombings and murder cases all around the world, and more so in places with the death penalty legalized. Rather than decreasing, it is more correlated with murder rates, as mentioned before. In conclusion, after reflecting back on my points I would like to turn back to the quote I mentioned at the beginning. It suggests how this system wouldn’t stop crime, which after all this has been brought to your attention. As much as it has its pros, like killing deadly criminals and keeping them off our streets, it most definitely has its cons whether it be that it costs a lot, puts innocent people at risk, or even have no effect on murder rates. This technique used in the world’s most eccentric countries is far too extreme, for our beloved nation. Therefore, I strongly disagree with the Death Penalty and it should be banned in Canada.
