Character Analysis: The Book Thief
Imagine living in a world where nobody's safe. Where loss and death happen everyday, but love is foreign and trusting someone is probably the biggest mistake they would ever make. The lives the characters in The Book Thief by Markus Zusak have to live are full of fear that they are either going to get killed or they did something to anger the Nazi soldiers or their supreme leader. Liesel Meminger and others overcome abandonment and loss, learn the effective and dangerous powers of words, experience love and trust (some for the first time in ages), and feel guilty. In the novel, Liesel and others feel abandoned and lose family members. First, Liesel lost her brother, Werner, at the beginning of the book, and then gets abandoned by her mother when she's put up for adoption. In the middle of the book, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, Liesel’s foster parents, lose their son to cruel Nazi warfare. Near the end, Max Vandenburg, the Jew they were hiding in their basement, leaves the Hubermann residence because he feels he was putting them in …show more content…
One example is when Liesel felt guilty of stealing a book. She thought of giving it back, but didn’t. Another example is when Rudy throws Liesel’s book in the water. They were having an argument when Rudy decide to throw Liesel’s book over the ledge of the bridge and into the river. He felt so bad, that he swam in freezing water to retrieve the book. A final example is when Max feels guilty for putting the Hubermanns in danger. Hiding a jew in Nazi Germany was an offense punishable by death. He decided to gather all his belongings from the basement and be on his way. He didn’t care that he could be captured by a soldier (which does end up happening) as long as he would put Liesel and the Hubermanns back in a safe position. The characters in the book feel so guilty about something, that they go to extremes to make it

The effectiveness of words is more impressive than we tend to understand. Words are just different combinations of the same letters, but without their existence, life would have no direction. We often take for granted our ability to share and comprehend ideas. Throughout The Book Thief, however, Liesel slowly realizes just how powerful her own words can be. Taking into consideration the stolen novels, the German autobiography, and the two stories written by Max, it is safe to say that each of these books contributes to the theme of The Book Thief.…

This passage was chosen because throughout the entire book the characters are tragically dying, especially at the end after the bombing. We see everyone that Liesel associated herself with die, and this one haunting sentence foreshadows the events. This statement makes it known to readers that death, is basically inevitable and that there will be a great deal of it in the text. The passage contributes to the work as a whole because it focuses in on one of the major themes in this novel, death. It uses death as a unifier, conclusively…

Although most assume Death looks like the Grim Reaper or a scary skeleton thing, in The Book Thief, Death is not. In fact, he even tells us what he looks like when he says, “I do not carry a sickle or a scythe. I only wear a hooded black robe when it’s cold. And I don’t have those skull-like facial features you seem to enjoy pinning on me from a distance… Find yourself a mirror while I continue” (Zusak 307). Essentially Death is saying that because all humans die, we all resemble death. Humans can and will die, and thus he is one of the things that is constant between all humans. Due to this reason I drew a man looking into a mirror to show Death. I just…

When Liesel saw Rudy “her hands were trembling” and she was “losing control and misjudging” things. Liesel was so shocked after seeing Rudy’s corpse that she started losing control of herself. She couldn’t accept his death, so she lost it and continuously tired to wake him up. Liesel described “Papa” as “a man with silver eyes, not dead ones.” Papa had silver eyes when he was alive so she expected him to have those eyes when she found him, but they disappeared and became dead after he lost his soul. His eyes “were all empty” and they “continued to rust.” After looking at Papa, Liesel said, “Goodbye, Papa, you saved me. You taught me to read.” This major detail expresses Liesel’s feelings towards her father, and it shows how important and influential “words” are to her.…

The main conflict in The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, is Hitler versus Liesel, which is a man versus man external conflict. The conflict between Hitler and Liesel is Hilter was the one who took away her birth mother, and her brother, both acts that Liesel despises him for. The author wrote, "...the suffering of her mother + the death of her brother= the Fuhrer" (Zusak 115). Since Hitler, or the Fuhrer, took away Liesel's birth family, a conflict was created between Liesel and Hitler. The lyrics in the song, "Fight Song", by Rachel Platten, described Liesel and Hitler's conflict perfectly. Platten wrote, "And all those thing I didn't say, wrecking balls inside my brain. I will scream them loud tonight, can you hear my voice this time" (Platten…

“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean, if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty” - Mahatma Gandhi. Markus zusak captured the same idea in the Book Thief. This book takes place during world war 2 / the holocaust. It’s about a girl who loses her loved ones in a bombing. Throughout this essay there will be 3 main points, Max’s book, Liesel’s friendship with Rudy, and Ilsa’s understanding of Liesel. The world may be horrifying to look at, but if you look real hard you will find a little grace and beauty in the world.…

The main character in the Book Thief, Liesel Meminger is similar to Cassie from The Fifth Wave. The reason is because they are both brave. In the Book Thief, Liesel is brave because she was hiding a Jew inside her house even though she knew that it was against the law. In The Fifth Wave, Cassie was brave because she sacrifices her life to destroy The Others’ spaceship to save her brother and the rest of the humans left in earth.…

In The Book Thief, a story by Markus Zusak, Liesel is trying to live through Nazi Germany during World War II. Liesel Meminger is a curious young girl who did not start as the book thief. Her first stolen book wasn’t intended to be stolen, it had simply been left behind; When her brother died, she picked up The Grave Digger’s Handbook. When she arrived at her foster parent’s home, it wasn’t long before her papa discovered this book. He taught her to read and it began Liesel’s obsession with words. She steals many books, and with her friend, Rudy’s help, they steal more. One day, Max, a Jewish man arrives at her house and her world changes. She grows to befriend the man, who lives in her basement. He writes books for her, and she brings him newspapers to fill out the crosswords. But when the war reaches its peak, it becomes too dangerous for Max to stay. Once he leaves, Liesel becomes sad. She misses Max dearly, but when he is walking down her street with many others on his way to a labor camp, she rushes out into the street to hug him; however, soldiers whip them both. The story ends with Himmel Street being bombed, and everyone she knows and loves is gone. Zusak’s unique writing…

The Book Thief displays the life of a nine-year-old foster child, Liesel, trapped within the walls of a seemingly uncontrollable series of deaths. The book starts just before the the Second World War, and the majority of the scenes take place either in Liesel’s foster home or, on the streets of Nazi Germany. As the title implies, an important theme in this story line is the power of words. Stripped of almost every source of euphoria in her life, Liesel finds solace in writing and reading books. Another evident theme in the novel is the prominence of dehumanization throughout the Second World War.…

The evangelist and publisher Dwight Lyman Moody once said that ‘Character is what you are in the Dark’. Simple as it is, this quote has a deeper meaning. The darkness may be interpreted as either isolation or danger. It, therefore, means that the actual nature of a person is revealed when they are alone or in a dangerous situation. It is a quote brought to life through the character of Hans Huberman in Markus Zusak’s ‘The Book Thief’ (Zusak, 45).…

The death of almost everyone on Himmel Street had impacted me the most. The aforementioned reason affected me the most because it reminded me that you can not control your fate. We had read many outside texts to supplement our understanding of The Book Thief. An example is John Donne's poem, “Death Be Not Proud”, this one helped my understanding of the book and the world the most because it helped picture the different portrayals of death. The other readings helped my understanding of the novel by giving me some background knowledge of the book. For example, the Auschwitz article showed what it actually was like in the concentration camps. The reading impacted my understandings of the world by showing me people give up even there most valuable…
