Character Sketch Mr
Character sketch Mr. Cowlishaw

To begin with Mr. Cowlishaw - aged twenty-four, a fair-haired bachelor with a weak mustache – was a commencing dentist. He had bought the practice of the retired Mr. Rapper, a dentist of very old school. His place of business – whatever high-class dentists choose to call it – was quite ready for Mr. Cowlishaw when he arrived at Hanbridge.

Mr. Cowlishaw was a well-educated and cultured person. Moreover he kept pace (идти в ногу) with everyday life and was well up in a lot of events that happened in the town. So Mr. Cowlishaw almost didn't wonder when Mr. Ranock came to the surgery and displayed Mr. Cowlishaw his widowed gum, because Mr. Cowlishaw had read the article about football match in the football edition of the Signal. But surely it was very unexpected to had him as a client on the first opening day of the surgery.

In addition it should be noted that Mr. Cowlishaw was dedicated to his occupation and didn't sinned against professional etiquette. He refused to fall in Mr. Ranock's genius scheme because it would be unprofessional for Mr. Cowlishaw to do this.

On the other hand Mr. Cowlishaw was a bit of nervous man. He was in panic when he took Mrs. Clowes' tooth out. She was mayoress and had a great influence in the town, and all the patronage of the aristocracy of Hanbridge was within Mr. Cowlishaw grasp... And the mere fact that she was his first real client caused him feel panic

I consider Mr. Cowlishaw healthy-minded (здравомыслящий), knowledgeable and intelligent character. I also believe he is easy to deal with and I would get on with such person like he.

An exclusive nature is also highlighted by the language used during the exchange between Peter and Cuddeford, with Cuddeford’s analogy of “bowling averages” showing that he expects knowledge of cricket to be held by those he is speaking to. Furthermore, the male workers all appear to have nicknames for each other, referring to one barrister as “Beaky” and an old judge as “Chugger”. This may suggest that the barristers are all from public schools such as Eton, and their schoolboy nicknames have stuck with them throughout their adult life.…

    Hulga Hopewell's Deception

Hopewell loved what she referred to as good country people; she thought they were the salt of the earth. That is why she allowed Mr. and Mrs. Freeman and their two daughters to live in their tenant house, even though Mrs. Freeman was a very nosey neighbor. So when a polite, young country gentleman named Manley Pointer came by one day selling bibles, she could never have known that he was in fact the scum of the earth. He took an instant interest in Hulga and quickly accepted the invite to stay for dinner. At dinner Manley did what he was expected to do, which was to talk about the lord, his church, himself, and also of a heart condition that was similar to Hulga’s. Mrs. Hopewell was touched by this young man and extended him an invitation to come back any time he wished, which he kindly accepted. As he was leaving, he stopped to talk to Hulga. Their conversation began with a lousy joke about a chicken and he asked her how old she was. Her response was a lie; she claimed she was only seventeen. He then told her that he noticed she had a wooden leg and that he found her very brave and sweet and that they were destined to meet. He also asked her to meet him on Saturday at her gate and go on a picnic with him, to which she…

Chief Bromden is the narrator of the story. In the first chapter, we find out about his physical appearance. He is very tall, strong and a half native American. He pretends to be deaf and dumb, but actually he is not, because he says that the black orderlies of the mental institution think that he is deaf and dumb, because he never says anything. He seems to be a very awkward character, because of his size and people’s attitudes towards him, but as we know his inner thoughts, we can see that his apparent stupidity and clumsy presence is all an act. The way he appears to the world is a superficial veneer, and gives him opportunities to eavesdrop and find out conversations which any of the other patients couldn’t do. The orderlies also make fun of him because he mops whenever and wherever he is told (that’s why he got the nickname Chief Broom, Chief because he is half native American and Broom because he mops all the time). He seems to be scared of the Big Nurse, he describes her as very powerful. She tells the orderlies to take Bromden aside and shave him, which he tries to avoid, because he says he hates it (Ch.1, Page.6 “Before anybody can turn and look for me I duck back in the mop closet, jerk the door shut dark after me, hold my breath, Shaving before you get breakfast is the worst time”) .…

In the first paragraph alone, many important aspects of the narrator's character are revealed. It is revealed to the reader that the narrator was in love and is grieving for the woman he loved. It is also in the first paragraph where the major conflict is revealed. The major conflict, in which the narrator is involved, is his own torment from the memory of his dead wife. This is evident when the narrator says, "When I saw our room again, our bed, our furniture, everything that remains of the life of a human being after death – I was seized by such a violent attack of fresh grief that I felt like opening the window and throwing myself onto the street." Initially, the author intends the reader to feel sorry for the narrator and his loss. The thing that motivates the narrator in the conflict is his resolution to finish grieving before it consumes him. This is evident when he says, "Happy is the man whose heart forgets everything that it has contained."…

It took us a good half hour to get all the way up the hill and to the dentists and by the time we got there we were late, but not by much. To our good fortune so was the doctor. We had literally just walked in the door when he called out Roald’s name. He guided us along to the surgery and told Roald to sit in the chair. The doctor had a quick look inside of Roald’s mouth and took me over the corner and whispered to me grimly ‘He’s going to have to have his adenoids removed’ ‘Does he have to’ I whispered back ‘Yes’ the doctor replied. Hearing this I stood back trying to keep a straight face to not give anything away.…
