and have African Americans working for them.
This young lady named Mary Grace appeared to be rather large in size and eighteen or nineteen years of age with acne on her face (O’Connor). Mary Grace was rude to Mrs. Turnip’s attempts at conversation with her. Mary Grace did not like how disrespectful Mrs. Turnip and the other ladies in the waiting room were conversating about African Americans. Mary Grace makes this clear when she hurls the book she was reading at Mrs. Turnip’s face, attempts to choke Mrs. Turnip, and verbalizes to Mrs. Turnip “go back to hell where you came from, you old wart hog” (O’Connor).
The comment made by Mary Grace causes Mrs. Turnip to feel anger. Mrs. Turnip goes out the their hogs and blasts them with the water hose while she keeps telling herself she is not an old wart hog (O’Connor). Mrs. Turnip believes she is a good Christian lady and does not how that girl could call such a rude thing.
Judgement is everywhere in society. People judge without realizing they are doing it. Mrs. Turnip was judged based on the conversation with the other ladies of the waiting room. After Mrs. Turnip arrived at home, she began to judge herself as a good Christian lady who not be compared to an old wart hog.
