A retelling of Beowulf in understandable English at a 1st -2nd grade reading level
Highlighters
Pages for each student of the 3 main characters in picture form
A sheet of 20 words to cut and paste
Scissors
Glue sticks pencils Sequencing
1. Review the experience we had with Jack
and the Beanstalk and the character words we attached to the character form to tell us what that character was like.
2. Point out the characters on the board
3. Re-read the section of Beowulf with special attention to phrases and words that describe the characters.
4. Highlight these words and phrases as we go.
5. Label the sheet of 20 words, using K for King, B for Beowulf, M for monster
6. Model placing the cut-up words with the correct character
7. Give students a chance to place words on the correct character at the board
8. Students cut up the words and place them on their own character pictures

Determine the percent ( x/20) of the words correctly placed by the student
