In Act III, sc. 1, Hamlet delivers his famous solilquy.."To be or not to be." The main purport of that soliloquy is:
whether one should love Ophelia or give up loving altogether
whether he should take action against Claudius and end his frustration
whether he should give in to his mood and commit suicide
whether he can continue to cope with the lies of Claudius
whether he can find a solution to the infidelity of his mother
2
When Ophelia is "loosed" on him in this scene, Hamlet answers her with curious answers. Those answers
make Polonius think he is made with love, but make the King think there's another cause
make Rosencrantz and Guildenstern look foolish
cause the King to wish Hamlet were dead
cause even Ophelia to think that Hamlet is covering up the truth
lead Gertrude to new heights of self awareness.

Hamlet's advice to the players at the beginning of Act III, scene 2, can be seen
as good advice to any actor at any time
as Shakespeare's advice to actors of his time, and of all time
as the advice we use in directing today
as an excuse for the trap he is about to set
as a way to get them to speak the overwritten speach so that the KIng will understand his guilt
4
In the middle of the play within the play (The Player's Play- The Murder of Gonzago), the King rises. This is an indication of
his delight with the play
his anger with the casting of the play
his internal fear and guilt
the needs of Ophelia to be loved and understood
Gertrude's misunderstanding of her role in the murder.
5
After the play, the King realizes his guilt, and
begs Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to kill Hamlet
bows in prayer to request forgiveness
confesses to Hamlet and to Gertrude
finds a way to get Hamlet out of the country where he may live in peace.
