Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice…
For the apparel oft proclaims the man…
Neither a borrower nor a lender be…
This above all, to thine own self be true"

These famous lines of Shakespeare's Hamlet are one of the most quoted lines of all Shakespeare's work. They ring true for us even today, and are still in our minds.

These lines are important to the character development of Polonius. To Polonius, his public image is the most important thing. But in reality, however, Polonius is just working for his own interests – he wants to control his public image. By saying these

He goes on to continue that the player would “drown the stage in tears and cleave the general ear with horrid speech” if he knew what Hamlet’s burden. He is thinking that the player was so skilled that he could have the entire kingdom revolting against Claudius in a five-minute speech than Hamlet has done in two acts of a play! Hamlet is upset and angry with himself because this is so. He has let the vile King out of his sight too many times when he could have taken revenge, but he has failed to do so. Hamlet’s soliloquy reflects this anger at failure theme in Act II, Scene…

Polonius treats his children quite differently based on the advice that he gives them. For Laertes, Polonius treats him like a man because he is going out in the world to France. Polonius says, “take each man’s censure but reserve thy judgment”(69) . He wants Laertes to listen to everyone’s opinion, but to reserve his judgement. Also, he said, “This above all: to thine own self be true”(78) . Laertes needs to be true to himself and not let others get to him. Even though he treats his son like a man, he does now treat Ophelia the same. He is very protective of her and wants to make sure his family is not a laughing stock. Also, He said, “Tender yourself more dearly, Or- not to crack the wind of the poor phrase” (107-108). Even though he cares…

When talking with Reynaldo, Polonius speaks in a clever and sneaky manner. He tells Reynaldo exactly how to speak to people while trying to find Laertes. He tells him exactly what to say so that the other person will be forced to tell him of the whereabouts of Laertes. He told him that he should say "you may say, not well. But, if 't be he I mean, he's very wild." Polonius's sneakiness is seen through his clever tactic in sending Reynaldo to Paris for the purpose of discovering Laerte's habits. When talking with his daughter Ophelia, however, he seems genuinely concerned. This is true because in regard to Laertes, Polonius was looking for an excuse to punish or disown him for leaving the country. However, by Ophelia, Polonius is really concerned.…

Hamlet said “O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I! Is it not monstrous that this player here, But in a fiction, in a dream of passion, Could force his soul so to his own conceit That from her working all his visage wann'd,Tears in his eyes, distraction in's aspect, A broken voice, and his whole function suiting With forms to his conceit? And all for nothing! For Hecuba! What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba, That he should weep for her? What would he do, Had he the motive and the cue for passion that I have? (II.II.58)”.Hamlet is revealed as overly analytical and indecisive through his attempts to avenge his father’s death. Hamlet is held back by his excessive consideration of religious morals and beliefs and his fear of completing his knowledge with action. Hamlet’s thoughts and actions are windows into this mindset. If Reynaldo has to act like a fake and be deceitful to find out some truth about Laertes that makes Laertes look bad, then that is fine with Polonius. Shakespeare’s texts have been re-visited, re-interpreted and re-invented to suit the context and preferences of an evolving audience, and it through this constant recreation it is evident that Hamlet “does not define or exhaust its possibilities”. Through the creation of a character who emulates a variety of different themes, such as revenge, realisation of reality and the questioning of humanity, we can see the different possibilities within Hamlet as an “admirable text” with enduring human value. Furthermore, the emotional journey of Hamlet and his progression of madness provide further opportunity for differing interpretations. Hamlet connects with audiences from a variety of socio-historic contexts primarily due to its address of fundamental human issues and what it is to be human.…

Polonius has conversed with King Claudius and Queen Gertrude about the reason behind Hamlet’s craziness. To prove that his assertions are correct, Polonius has come up with a strategy. In this text, Polonius is saying that he will send off Ophelia to Hamlet while him and Claudius secretly hide behind the arras to watch. Polonius uses the description of “loosing” his daughter. The phrase “loose” is generally mentioned when referring to a dog/an animal. In addition, the term could be meant to set free from confinement. With the use of this terminology, Polonius is portrayed as impudent and controlling. Furthermore, the motif of misogyny is present from Polonius’ way of depicting Ophelia. The way he speaks of her, “loose[ning],” represents how…
