The type of response Jean used on Charlene at the end of the case was also accommodating. Even though she knew that Charlene was not doing well in the main office, she tried promoting her to the become a floater staff who were senior tellers that are self-motivated and can be sent to branch offices to cover vacations and leaves of branch personnel. Even though her job and relationship with Terri may be compromised, she made that decisions to be able to keep the friendship she has with Charlene.

the main office, she was able to develop strong network of friends, can easily make others feel at ease and gain cooperation from them. She understood that people in the main office highly value friendships and cliques, so she used that opportunity to build her own network who will treasure their friendship over their work roles. She was able to influence their decisions to act against those who oppose her. She was able to gain cooperation from fellow tellers to hate or to at least influence them to question Terri’s authority and knowledge. She was able to make Terri uncomfortable by joking with the other senior teller until she comes. It was a great success because Terri actually felt that Charlene was determined to make her look incompetent so she would be demoted. Charlene was able to gain sympathy among senior tellers, so there were greater signs of uncooperativeness toward Terri. Lastly, she was also able to influence Jean to promote her and take her out from probation just so she and Charlene can still enjoy the friendship they have together.
6. What three negotiation strategies could Terri have used to manage Charlene? Explain how these negotiation strategies can effectively improve Charlene’s job performance. (15 points)
One negotiation strategy that Terry could use to manage Charlene is through showing Charlene that her concerns are important to the supervisor.
Due to Charlene having a hard time coping with the environment and the job she is at, the organization can transfer Charlene to a respective department that fits her skill set best. When Charlene was on probation, she seemed to be more willing to communicate with Terri, but the main problem is that she was in a job that she was just not able to perform well. Terri has been a witness of how good Charlene is in gaining cooperation from different groups of people in the main office. To take advantage of that, Charlene can be transferred to the sales and marketing department. What Terri could say is that because she sees a potential in Charlene to be excelling in the sales team due to her being able to form large network of loyal people, it is better for her to build her career path leaning on that. Even though she will be starting in a low position, she will eventually be able to climb that ladder because of her excellent skill. If there are any vacancies in that department, the company can offer the respective position to Charlene. In this case, Charlene knows that the concerns are not immediately invalidated by the supervisor. It can be a win-win situation for both parties because Charlene is able to build her career in the sales department while the department where she is now staying can breathe from all the conflicts that has been …show more content…
happening.
Second negotiation strategy is to reward the behavior of associates and fight antagonism not the antagonist. At the end of each week, associates and supervisors can hold meetings together and try to resolve conflicts or any issues that are bothering them whether inside or outside the organization. These meetings also hold appreciating and rewarding those people who have contributed a lot in the organization. In the case of Charlene, Terri can point out in the meeting how she appreciates her for improving a lot for the time being, rewarding her with praise, but on the other note, the meeting also addresses what associates should improve on. In this case, Terri will be able to monitor everyone and appreciate everyone for their work. Charlene will not feel that she is only there because of her errors and tardiness but because she is competent like them. This may motivate her to do better in her performance. Even though improvement on performance may not be guaranteed, this will mitigate the conflict inside the organization as they will be able to discuss their conflicts with one another and resolving them altogether.
The last negotiation strategy that can be used to help manage Charlene is through remind her of her role obligations.
Terri may be able to remind Charlene of her purpose in the company which is to actually contribute positively in the company. If she is not able to comply with what the management wants and be of the standards of what the organization wants, there is no way she can help her already. She may need to ask Charlene’s full effort at this point. Terri needs to wake Charlene up because tardiness can never be an excuse that she is actually already doing everything she can for the benefit of the organization. Terri has mentioned in the case that the job may just be not right for her, but not being able to be early means she may not be putting 100% in her job. It can be a faulty assumption of Terri that she cannot handle the job, but maybe motivating her and waking her from the illusion that she will be saved by her companions every time may help. Terri can negotiate to Charlene that she can actually offer her time for mentorship only if Charlene will accept
it.
9) What three political tactics did Terri and Mr. Ring used to convince Jean that she is not right to take Charlene off from probation. Explain how these tactics influenced or did not influence Jean’s decision. (15 points)
Consultation
One political tactic that Terri used to convince Jean that she is not right in taking Charlene off from probation is through consultation. After the arrival of Jean at the office later that day, she immediately talks to Jean for the department’s current status. Afterwards, she also began telling her the organization is facing because of Charlene. She was hoping that Jean will listen to her and that she will agree with the organization’s decision to remove her. Jean immediately refused because she believes that she can handle Charlene’ attitude and improve her performance. In contrast to what Terri hoped to happen, Charlene was brought back to the organization as a regular employee. The situation got worse for Terri as all his efforts from the day he got to work for the office has now been wasted.
Rational Persuasion
Another tactic to convince Jean is through rational persuasion. Terri used logical arguments and factual information to be able to persuade Jean with her request of letting Charlene stay in probation. Terri first tried to tell Jean about the current situation of the company where Charlene is causing problems to the organization. She has been tardy and committing a lot of teller errors harming the organization. Mr. Ring even presented to Jean about the specific interest error Charlene has committed. This did not convince Jean either because she was confident that Charlene could be turned around by her efforts.
Legitimizing
The last tactic Terri used to convince Jean is through legitimizing. Even though Jean wants to return Charlene to her regular job, Terri tried to convince her by presenting what management wants and how probation works. She told Jean that Charlene has already violated her probation, so it would make sense that she be terminated at the end of two weeks. But still through this political tactic, Jean remained strong in her stand that she will be able to handle Charlene and make her improve her performance. This is also due to the fact that they are friends, so Jean would not want her friend to lose her job on her watch.
