Charlotte's Web Essay
Charlotte is the main character of the book Charlotte’s Web by E.B.White. Charlotte is a spider in this book. He has a friend called Wilbur. He uses his web to save his friend’s life. He is nice, talented and knowledgeable. The first trait of Charlotte is nice. In the book, he said to his friend Wilbur: “I will be a friend to you. I have watched you all day and I like you.” When everybody doesn’t like Wilbur and he was upset, Charlotte talked to him and wants to be a friend with him. He also helped him to become happy and let everybody be a friend with him. “You shall not die,” said Charlotte, briskly “What? Really?” cried Wilbur. “Who is going to save me?” “I am,” said Charlotte. When Charlotte knows that Wilbur is going to kill by a man, he chose to try his best to save him. Every spider has a skill that they can have food.     Susanna Rowson does a great job of depicting the innocence and ignorance of a young woman in Charlotte Temple. Although, she does a greater job of showing the tactics people will use to achieve what they have set their mind to. The title of this work leads you to believe it will be about a character named Charlotte. While it is about her, I understand the story to be more about two other characters, Montreville, a lieutenant in the army, and Mademoiselle LaRue, a teacher at the school Charlotte attends. Though Charlotte maintains a strong role throughout the work, Rowson states in her preface, "…but conscious that I wrote with a mind anxious for the happiness of that sex whose morals and conduct have so powerful an influence on mankind in general…" (Rowson 1362). With this statement Rowson, I believe, is implying that she will venture to disclose the extent people will go to in order to gain what they desire.     Charlotte believed that The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and “the choice of subject was an entire mistake” (page 304, Wuthering Heights). Charlotte then goes on to say that Anne had pure motives but the subject matter was too crude. Charlotte believed that Anne “hated her work, but would pursue it” (page 305, Wuthering Heights). Charlotte made these claims after Anne's death so Anne was unable to defend these claims. However, in the preface for the second edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, she says that she wanted to write the truth. The truth is so rarely the safest option, the truth is hard to pursue. As Anne put it, “to represent a bad thing in its least offensive light...is the most agreeable course...but is it the most honest or the safest? Is it better to reveal the snares and pitfalls of life to the young...or to cover them with branches and flowers” (page 4, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall)? Anne had to make a choice as she was writing a difficult subject matter. She had a choice between the honest or the safe path. Anne chose to write the truth, even if it was scandalous. Anne would rather show people the hard aspects of life than to hide the challenges with a beautiful life so that it would be a surprise to whomever walks on it. Charlotte was attempting to protect her sisters name, to defend her, even though it was by denying something her sister worked so hard on.
