According to chapter seven of Society (2006) deviance is the recognized violation of cultural norms. Something deviant in Europe might not be considered deviant in the United States. Someone who behaves in a manner which is against the norm of their culture is considered deviant. Some examples of human behavior that is considered deviant in some countries are woman who wear makeup, or woman being allowed to vote. According to Society (2006), woman in Saudi Arabia not only cannot vote, but are not allowed to drive automobiles as well. In the United States on the other hand, woman are allowed to wear makeup, vote, and drive automobiles. This is a good example

    I do believe that deviance is socially constructed. Very much socially constructed even within a single country, and single time, different subgroups may consider certain actions as "normal" while others outside that group may consider the activity as deviant. A good illustration of this is what young people consider to be 'ok' and not 'ok' compared with what older people think.Variation geographically, variation between classes, between cultural groups (tribal, religious etc.) and variation in time within such groups all show variation in what is considered normal, and what has a strong taboo. Put a little simplistically 'Law' represents a codification of acceptable and taboo behaviors. It usually reflects a combination of tradition and the interests and views of the dominant social groupings within a society. So the powerful have more influence in deciding what is proscribed and approved than the less powerful. While it may be argued that killing, theft, rape etc are commonly proscribed behaviors across many cultures and many times, there are plenty of exceptions,I would agree that the "Realist" perspective has much more going for it. While we might have philosophical problems in providing an ultimate justification for the root of decisions on what tests we use to determine what is moral and I believe this is a crucial point in determining what is classified "Deviant" and what is the basis of what is proscribed by Law "Harm" might be a good criteria to consider. I can also say that I I believe that crime and deviance are centered on the individual's misalignment with their self. Because there is not really any such thing as a group, as everyone is their own being.     When the violation of social norms occurs you most likely are experiencing deviant behaviors. These forms of behaviors have been also considered abnormal in some cases. What is crime to you? Rape, murder, burglary; all have been considered deviant forms of behaviors by society. Although, taking it into consideration what might seem as corruptive to some might not be to others. Sometimes deviance and abnormalities do not coordinate. “Some forms of deviance are not violations of the criminal laws, and the reverse is equally true.” (Criminology Today, Page, 5) Although, here in the United States of America the legal age for consuming alcoholic beverages would be 21, in places like Europe, and South America it is legal to drink at 18. This of course, would be seen in America as wrongful and deviant, but it is not against the criminal law in other parts of the world. There are also some behaviors though which people would not see those as deviant are still considered against the law. Prostitution, is known to be almost uniformly illegal in United States, yet, certain parts of Nevada approve of this behavior. They believe that as long as those engaged abide by the states laws of being protected and getting medical checkups weekly, it could be allowed. Now, most would view this behavior extremely deviant, but licensed brothels in Nevada do not. Same-sex marriages, seems to be the topic of the year. So far only thirteen states have made it legal to marry someone of your same sex. California (by court), Delaware, Minnesota, Rhode Island (by state), and Maryland (by popular vote) have all this year made it possible for gay couples to openly “tie the knot.” In contrast, thirty- five states still disagree with same-sex marriages. Another good topic to bring up is legalization of Marijuana, this year Illinois and New Hampshire have legalized the use of the drug.
