Cheerleading Essay
Cheer has been a big part of my life since the day I joined my first team. I spend countless hours at the gym working on my tumbling to improve my personal skills and become a better athlete. At practice, we run routines over and over in hopes of making it to nationals. But cheer is so much more than just a sport. Cheerleading has taught me the importance of hard work and dedication, the value of teamwork, and how to manage my time. My freshman year of high school I was determined to make the level four team at my all-star gym. I spent a lot more time outside of regular practice at the gym tumbling and stunting. I needed my level four skills before tryouts and I was nowhere close to having all my skills. In order to get them I had to work harder than I ever had before and try new things regardless of how scared I was. I was only able to make the level four team that year because I pushed myself and worked hard to get where I needed to be. Without dedicating extra hours and utilizing every minute to better myself I would not have been able to get make a level four team. Many other …show more content…
Each person on the team has his or her own role that is of equal importance as the next person. In a stunt, every person has their own role to make the stunt hit. The bases have to keep the flyers foot flat so she can stand on top of them and the flyer has to stay tight in the air so the bases can hold her up. If one person slacks in their part the whole stunt falls. Although each person has their own individual role, they are a part of the team and without them the team wouldn’t succeed. Even with your own part you have to learn to work together to make the routine look good. The team is also there to pick you up when you fall and encourage you and cheer you on when you succeed. As a team, you can accomplish a lot more working together versus working against each other and trying to individually be the

In the past three years, the NFL has faced a multitude of lawsuits dealing with the unfair payment of NFL cheerleaders. Multiple different articles support the cheerleaders, agreeing that an average of a $1,000 salary each year is unfair. However, other articles are against a higher payment, claiming that cheerleaders work because they enjoy the sport, rather than for the money. While Megan McArdle’s article, “NFL Cheerleaders Don’t Do it for the Money” uses informal diction, comparisons to other jobs, and concession to the opposition to support the claim that the cheerleaders do not deserve to be paid more, “Who Do We Under-Compensate?”, by Ira Boudway, uses a more formal diction, statistics, and concession to the other side of the argument to support the opposite.…

Cheer is not just a sport. It is intense physical activity with a purpose- to serve as a motivation for the team. Taking two full sport seasons, the dedication and energy required from these young cheerleaders is unbelievable. For up to 2 1/2 hours a day, they work together to achieve their goal: perfect routines to make the Hilltop Football and Basketball teams engulf in victories. These devoted cheerleaders spent 3 days at Cheer Camp and one day at the District Camp, where they expanded their knowledge and creativity for our school. However, these days spent were not for competition, but for learning from each other. Still, their natural competitive nature filled their minds and actions, self-motivating them to execute their best efforts…

In my opinion, Allstar Cheerleading is indeed a sport. My reasoning behind my opinion is that Allstar cheerleading takes just as much, or more physical activity, requires skills necessary to compete a routine, and involves events comparable to games for football, baseball, etc.…

In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…

It teaches the importance of certain life qualities and some lessons to take away. The cheerleaders compete at compititions against other teams. Knowing this information still makes people indecisive in their decision of if cheer qualifies as a sport. According to Eileen Lofrese (Macedo, 2010, para. 10-11), most people can’t decide whether cheer is a sport or not because of its inconsistency. Some schools may only have a cheer team that cheers at games, but other schools have a competitive varsity team. Coach Stevens (personal communication, January 20, 2016) says that she believes cheer is a sport that isn’t fully developed yet. She…

A sport is defined as “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (Dictionary.com). Someone can’t roll out of bed and be an amazing cheerleader. Cheerleading is an activity that takes massive amounts of skill and physical prowess, but on July 22nd of 2010 Connecticut Judge Stefan R. Underhill ruled competitive cheerleading as not being a sport. Considering the physical demand of the activity, the court system should reconsider competitive cheerleading as a sport.…

Competition cheer is one type of cheerleading. It is usually associated with a gym that teaches tumbling, gymnastics, and cheerleading all in one. Most of the squads have more than one coach such as a tumbling coach, a stunting coach, and a choreographer. Competition cheerleaders have one main objective which is to compete. Since they are competing, the squad must be dedicated to practicing and performing. The cheerleaders do not cheer for other sports such as basketball or football like in high school. They also do not use offense or defense cheers, but they use “competition cheers” instead. Just like being in other sports in school, you must try out to be on the team. Competition tryouts are a lot harder than in high school. You must go through…

Growing up, I was never naturally athletic and very injury prone. Regardless of these issues, I always remained determined and strived to accomplish my goals. As I enter high school one of my main goals was to make the varsity tennis team. During my freshmen year I practiced every day for the first 3 months of school hoping that I could just make the team. Unfortunately I tore a ligament in my wrist for the second time which prevented me from practicing till right before the tennis season started. I ended barely making the JV team which was very disappointing, but it only motivated me for next year. In my heart I knew that I if I was determined enough I could play varsity next year on my own merit. As I progressed through the sophomore year,…

After countless games, practices, and competitions, nothing quite compares to standing on the eight panel mat in front of thousands of unfamiliar faces or a high school football game on Friday night. It is a unique atmosphere where there is an air of utter togetherness and positive energy that I have never experienced anywhere else during my four years of cheering. Although it is the most intense, stressful, and time-consuming activity I have participated in, cheerleading means the world to me. Needless to say, cheerleading has had a tremendous impact on my life and I have learned valuable life lessons from this amazing sport.…
