The next part of this cycle is the oxidation of ammonium, also called nitrification. This step takes the nitrogen compound, in this case ammonia, and oxidizes it into nitrite and nitrate. This is a two step process first the ammonium is oxidized into nitrite and then the nitrite is oxidized into nitrate. Nitrite is toxic; therefore, nitrate is the form that almost all nitrogen is absorbed by most crop plants grown on dry land.…

Nitric acid, or known as NHO3aq is an acid formed from reaction of ammonia and oxygen. Nitric acid is a colourless acid when it’s pure, or can be found yellow or red. This acid can be very corrosive to eyes and skin and can cause severe burns to human skin and tissues. It is miscible to water, and has a very pungent smell. Nitric acid is very reactive and can is able to melt many metals, and non metals. As a solution, nitric acid is known as a good conductor of electricity. When combining ammonia and oxygen, water and nitrogen, it is known as nitric acid.…

NO3- or otherwise known as Nitrate, not to be confused with Nitrite, is located in period 2 group 15. Nitrate is an element that can not be observed by any of the senses other than sight and touch because it is known to be odorless and tasteless. Nitrate starts within the earths soil but filters into water and plants when it is mixed with rain water that is either cycled back into larger bodies of water or into the plants that take the water from the soil. The plants use the nitrate to satisfy nutrient requirements. the nitrate molecules will often filter into the leaves and stems of the plants. Nitrate is normal quite harmless in water when there isn't such a high quantity of it within the water one is consuming. If to much nitrate is consumed it can often cause methemoglobinemia This can cause less oxygen to reach certain tissues such as the brian which can often result in death. Methemoglobinemia is more likely to occur within infants or younger children due to their lack of years to develop to the effects of higher concentrations of nitrate. But it is not uncommon for it to occur in adults with an abnormally low production of the methemoglobin enzyme.…

To create the Diazonium salt, which reacted with N,N-Dimethylanaline to form the product both sodium carbonate and concentrated HCl was added to sulfanilic acid. The sodium carbonate accepts a hydrogen from sulfanilic acid a zwitterion therefore making it much more reactive later in the reaction. The concentrated HCl was used to form a nitrosonium ion from sodium nitrate. The oxygen attacks two hydrogen ions in solution and leaves as a water molecule. This process created the nitrosonium ion that reacts with the activated sulfanilic acid to create the diazonium salt.…

When reacting, nitrates release two of their three oxygen atoms. Because the oxidation does not result in the release of all available oxygen, the reaction is not as vigorous as that of other oxidizers and is more controlled. This is why nitrates are used as the major component of black powder. In fireworks their main purpose is to provide the initial thrust to power the package into the sky and to ignite…
