The goal of chemo is to stop or slow the growth of cancer cells in a certain area but it can work throughout the whole body. Side effects happen when chemotherapy damages healthy cells. There are many effects that chemotherapy has on your body.
Chemotherapy has a big effect on the brain and can cause problems with thinking and memory. Some people have trouble thinking and concentrating. People often call this chemo brain. This brain function could be caused by the cancer itself, low blood counts, sleep problems, infections, depression, stress or anxiety.
Studies are looking for what drug is linked to chemo brain and ways to prevent it. There may be certain drugs that can help protect the brain during cancer treatment.
Patients that take chemotherapy treatment often experience hair loss. These treatments can cause hair loss my harming the cells that help hair grow. Chemotherapy may cause hair loss all over your body. It may also take several weeks after the treatment for the hair to grow back. There is no treatment that exists that can guarantee that your hair wont fall out but several treatments have been investigated as possible ways to prevent hair loss.
Chemotherapy also causes different types of pain such as headaches, muscle pain, stomach pain, pain from nerve damage (burning, numbness, shooting pain usually in fingers or toes). The causes of the pain could be the tumor, surgery, and simply the chemotherapy.
Cancer is something that the world has to deal with even if its not such a good thing. The effects that chemotherapy has on patients will hopefully one day not exist anymore. Studies have tried to find a cure for cancer for a while now and hopefully that will soon be a reality.
