Introduction
Chemotherapy is one of the treatment methods considered effective in cancer treatment. Chemotherapy destroys cancer cells and can slow or stop the growth or spread of these cells. Chemotherapy involves usage of anti-cancer drugs which helps in destroying the cancer cells existing in the body. Despite the benefits accrued from chemotherapy treatment, there are several disadvantages of chemotherapy that does not make it the best option for cancer treatment. Some of the disadvantages of chemotherapy that this paper will discuss include its immediate physical side effects, its cognitive problems and the long-term effects it has on patients.

Uddin (2017) also indicated that chemotherapy treatment may also result to infertility, which can affect the patient’s ability to conceive and carry a pregnancy for women and hinders the ability to father a child for men. Despite the fact that chemotherapy has been shown to be effective in the resolution of many cancer types, there is also a risk that the cancer after termination of the chemotherapy may reemerge. Some of the late effects of chemotherapy are as discussed below;
Chemotherapy can lead to heart problems. Heart conditions associated with chemotherapy include congestive heart failure which weakens the heart muscle resulting to shortness in breath, swollen feet and hands and dizziness, coronary artery disease associated with chest pains and shortness in breath, Arrhythmia which refers to irregular heartbeat and usually causes lightheadedness, chest pain and shortness in breath, high blood pressure which is also known as hypertension is also common among patients who have undergone …show more content…
In most cases it results into very severe implications which can be tragic. Chemotherapy has both immediate and long-term physical and emotional side effects as well as cognitive effects. The side effects of chemotherapy range from less severe effects such as fatigue to fatal effects such as heart problems and the destruction of fundamental organs such as the kidney. Thus, other methods of cancer treatment should be employed in dealing with cancer as opposed to chemotherapy which has caused detrimental effects on the cancer patients leaving survivors which a burden of bearing the pain of the failure of the process.
