One striking features of Romanesque art was the Romanesque Church Portal. The 5 parts of the Romesque Church Portal are the tympanum, the voussoirs, the lintel, the trumeau and the jambs.
The tympanum was the concentric arches above the main entrance. The voussoirs were angled blocks forming the "archivolts" or continuous arch frame around the tympanum. The lintel was the beam that was placed horizontally across the church doorway. The trumeau was the central column that supported the lintel in the center of the doorway. The jambs were the side walls of the doorway. I also found it interesting that "the clergy considered the church doorway the beginning of the path to salvation through Christ" (Kleiner 350).
