Chief Davis External Role
"The external role of police executive's involves the managing of the police organization's interaction with their environments as the department's spokesperson in official communications with a variety of governmental and community groups (Thacer, Lowell)." Chiefs are responsible for making sure that all necessary resources for his department to be able to function properly, are in order (Thacer, Lowell). Chief Davis exhibited his external role quite often. Chief Davis came into office with a clear vision, build a relationship with the community. Chief Davis would sponsor meetings to meet with anyone who had an opinion about his department. Not only did he sponsor meetings, he also attended as meetings sponsored throughout the community. Chief Davis, being the spokesperson for the department, was able to get the support of the community to build a police sub station in a crime infested …show more content…
Fortier's faced problems because lack of communication between the government and the department, which was one of Frontier responsibilities that he neglected. Then, the city hall disliked the idea of the police department making decisions without informing them. He also neglected to open his doors to the public. "The only time that the community enter acted with the police was during calls for service and newspaper reports (Thacer, Riverside)."

The internal role of the police chief involves managing the police organization itself and everything that takes place within the boundaries of the organization. Managing and leading are two of the most important roles of being chief. Chief Davis internal role started with spreading his vision throughout his department, the community, and the government. Davis delegated officers at each rank to head certain programs to work through and with them to accomplish his goal.
