How childhood abuse affects mental illness in adults? Not everyone that experiences child abuse will show symptoms, but the effects of childhood abuse can influence adulthood behavior. Some people are not able to recover from the devastating effects of childhood trauma and waste their potential on substance abuse or other illicit lifestyles. They can end up in prison, uneducated and develop self destructive behaviors with poor social skills. I am interested in this question because I want to work with abused children and by knowing how abuse could affect them in adulthood. There may be some preventions we could take to help lower the high risk that abused children have at developing a substance addiction.
