Childhood Obesity: Documentary Analysis
Overjudged, Undereducated Overfed and Undernourished a documentary showcasing the prevalence of childhood obesity. The film not only included showing the reasons why children are facing this problem but also showed hoe to combat it. The document mainly focused on what was the cause, regardless of lifestyle, diet, or weight all of those factors can be summed up into one word. Choices. People have the choice to live a healthy lifestyle, eat a healthy diet, and keep a healthy weight. Life is all about Choices, the choice of what to wear, what to say, what to do and in the case of Liam the most important was how to live a healthy life. Lifestyle is often not thought of when thinking of weight. For Liam when going through his weightless program …show more content…
Rightfully so, a diet is a key role in weight loss but the biggest factor in weight gain. Before Liam moved in with his aunt and uncle he was eating what his dad provided for him. Just as all children do they eat what their parents give them, however that does not mean you need to eat three portions of dinner and a bad lunch. The experts in the movie said that eating healthy can be done cost effectively just as eating unhealthy it is all about choices. If children decide to eat one portion of a pasta dinner that is better and healthier than eating three, if a child eats one portion of an eggplant parmesan that is healthier than eating three portions. Diet is all about balance; the word “diet” in medieval Latin actually means daily balance and somewhere humans have lost the idea of that meaning. Diet is more than just watching how much you eat as stated in the film. Diet is about what you eat, when you eat and why you eat. Are you eating because you are hungry, or because you are bored? Why are you eating that much, because you are hungry or because it was just sitting there? People need to learn self-control and Liam learned self-control after a few weeks and many a meltdown with his aunt and uncle on the Gold Coast. The what you eat is the easy part, Green is good one expert said. Of course not all healthy food is green but eat healthy and keep portions reasonable too much of anything is

Phil bravely states that he will not tell me what I want to hear; he seems to revel in his “I call it as I see it; I will tell you the truth” philosophy. Effective weight control will never be “quick and easy”, but that is “doable”. His book espouses a philosophy that is brilliant in its simplicity. He includes a wealth of self-analysis in the form of assessments, timelines, goal setting, readiness profiles and action plans. His book incorporates concrete details for daily planning and food action plans, which include a specific system of meal planning that is widely used by dietitians and health organizations. He describes a divided-plate system for meal planning: ¼ protein, ¼ starch, and ½ low-calorie, high-fiber plant-based food—fruits and vegetables.…

Food has become an addiction to these people, as they depend on food to pleasure them. This is known as dopamine, it reacts as our brain is telling them to continue that pleasure, in this case to keep eating. Two of the people we saw in the movie had to be hospitalized. One man was eating almost 14 thousand calories per day. That is what an average person should be eating in two weeks. But this addiction is leading their lives to death. As professor Dulai mentioned in lecture, an individual should maintain a healthy diet. This means having small portions, making half of our plates fruits and vegetables and having different “colors” in our meal. When watching these films, the main foods these individuals would intake is fried foods, candy, cookies, soda, and overall greasy foods. They weren’t showing healthy snacks such as carrots, apples or even grapes. These individuals were eating 10 times the recommended amount of food an individual should eat. This addiction is known as dopamine, which is released by hormones when eating a particular type of food and it makes the individual want more. This particular problem has affected these individuals which…

In the beginning of the movie, a quote by ancient doctor Hippocrates was read and shown for everyone to read. The quote was, “Let food be thy medicine” (Hippocrates). A person with no health knowledge might think that this quote is crazy because they live in a society where food is thought to only do the body harm. It is true that food can be one’s body’s worst enemy. However, it can also be the body’s best friend; the right foods that is. Eating healthy foods keeps one away from the doctor as long as they continue to do so. Eating things that is not good for one’s body excessively has a lot of negative consequences.…

My assessment: I think "less intrusive interventions" is better idea then removing a child from a family. The last one is an unnecessary action, and may be even damaging for children 's psyche. I don 't defend parents, I also think that parental role is important in children’s obesity issues. I agree that parents should get educated on how to provide healthy nutrition and reasonable activity level for their children. This article would support the idea in my paper that parents are also an important part of society that should be involved in a process of preventing and reducing childhood…

While growing up, children all across America were told, “Remember, it is better to start while you're young.” including me. Does this include starting off obese when we are younger too? Many more times than I possibly could have imagined I have seen an obese child. While watching the documentary Fed Up, couldn’t help but think to myself, “Has the world really changed so much throughout the time of my Grandparents.” I went and asked them if obesity even existed when they were my age. My grandpa’s response was, “Back there was the war to worry about. Kids worked on the farm before and after school. There was no time to go and get a burger whenever we felt like. Time was money and we didn’t have very much of either.” Ever since 1997, when George…

In the essay, Maxfield continued for much of the essay to discredit Pollan’s work claiming he was just another of many experts to the masses who can’t properly feed themselves. She leans more favorable towards Kate Harding Paul Campos train of thought which are scholars who find fault with the body mass index to calculate body fat and determine obesity. The author falls in line with and quotes several times nutritionists Michelle Allison who believes in health at every size and what a person eats doesn’t matter as how they eat it.…

The narrative structure of “Super Size Me” was built around a central enigma, this being the obesity crisis facing the American people. The documentary follows a format, showing the audience Spurlock eating McDonalds food and then feeling sick because of it and then followed by footage of Spurlock seeing a specialist to inform both Spurlock and the audience of the many health risks this diet is inflicting on Spurlock. The documentary then proceeds to show such things as what school canteens are serving kids at school. This is meant to shock the audience and position them to believe what is happening to Spurlock and his health after eating fast food will also happen to the kids who are eating unhealthy and processed meals at school every day.
