For those that were exposed to continuous abuse for a long period of time, the suicide intentions increase. (Cort, 2012 p. 563)

In drug using populations, childhood abuse and neglect are determining factors of suicide. (Marshall, 2013 p. 69) A study was conducted that included 1634 participants that had a history of child abuse and depression in a drug-using community. Out of this group 411 had stated in their life they have had suicidal behavior. Over the course of 5-years there had been 97 reports of suicide attempts among 80 participants. With a specific group of drug users the study found that suicide behavior was more common than that of the general population. Overall the study found that health professionals who are working with drug users should be aware of history with childhood trauma. (Marshall, 2013
