According to United-Nations Convention-on-the-Rights-of-the-Child ' which India has ratified, a child means every human being below the age of eighteen years . But in India various laws related to children define children in different age limits. The Census of India considers children to be any person below the age of 14. Along with UN Convention on the Rights of the Child,our Indian Constitution and Laws, determine what rights all children must have.

Right to free and compulsory elementary education for all children in the 6-14 year age group
Right to be protected from any hazardous employment till the age of 14 years
Right to be protected from being abused and forced by economic necessity to enter occupations unsuited to their age or strength
