Nowadays, as the opening of China’s international market, china is no longer a stranger for America. The relationship between these two countries becomes closer and closer. So what are the differences and similarities of culture between China, one of the countries with longest history, and America, the strongest country in the world?
One obvious difference is the collectivism and individualism. In China, people care about family a lot. However, in America, individualism is prevalent. American people appreciate personalities. Independence is one of the most common life style of American. Whereas, the young people in China relatively rely on their parents. What’s more, some personal questions such as age, salary and marriage are “taboo” in America. If some friends turn up out of the blue uninvited, they are not that welcome in America (including parents). Nevertheless, in China, the situation is not the same.
Secondly, in America, people can contact and talk with each other very relax even though they are not the same age or they have different social positions. But in China, it is not polite if young people call the names of elder people and professors. In America, people are open and direct. They would argue with each other if they disagree with them. However, in China, people would like to avoid conflicts. Polite and harmony is one of the biggest parts in Chinese culture.
In spite of these differences, these two different cultures share similarities. Talking about China, maybe some Americans who don’t know much about China would portray China as hostile and stiff. As a Chinese, I can feel the changing day by day. Some people treat too much about ideology to ignore Chinese culture. Chinese culture is a developing and learning one just like America culture.
