Essay Prompt #6 St. Joseph’s French Convent School was the first school that Adeline went to and it had a big impact on her interests. Adeline likes St. Joseph's a lot since all the girls looked similar to her, in their uniform. This made Adeline feel like she belongs there, unlike her home, where she was the smallest and the least cared about. “My classmates made me feel as if I “belonged” Unlike my siblings nobody looked down on me” (Mah 13). The quote compares her home with her school and she finds that her school is the better environment for her. In the beginning, she was a little shy, but then she proceeds to make some new friends and she also wins the class election. “They want to give you a surprise celebration party for winning the election for class president. Everyone has brought a gift. They mean well.” (Mah 113). The quote takes place when Adeline wins head girl for her school. When she comes home, her friends follow her to throw her a surprise party. She makes these friends because of her writing, which made her famous. This party symbolizes how much they care for her and like her. She makes a close friend called Wu Chen-mei and she helps with Adeline feeling like she belongs. Wu Chen-mei has a birthday party and invites Adeline over, she persuades Adeline to run for Head Girl of the school, and she also throws the surprise party for when Adeline wins the Head Girl election. Wu Chen-mei also provides Adeline with books, and in return, Adeline helps Wu Chen-mei with arithmetic. Adeline loves the books that Wu Chen-mei gives her and this gets her interested with reading.
