On Friday April 21, I went to a concert at GGC. There were four different pieces being played that night by three good composers. Two of the pieces stood out to me that night. One by Dr. Katherine Emeneth who played the flute. The piece was called lipstick by Jacob Ter Veldhuis it was not my favorite song that night…

The only performer, performing this evening was an aspiring pianist named Judy Huang. The performer had a charismatic personality, with a little bit of an accent. She gladly welcomed us and opened her recital by introducing herself. The event occurred in the Art Building, C-104 at approximately 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday of October 07, 2008. She humbly dedicated and donated her time to share her piano skills. She proudly opened her recital by presenting how honored she was to be able to perform for college students that had appreciation for the art of music. She played some fast pace and slow moving melodic classical music with accuracy and perfection. Some of the classical songs she played includes: Sonata…
The orchestras played this piece to create a great closing to the concert. The conductor made a great decision to arrange this song to be at the end giving almost a sense of closure. The addition of the percussionist again helped give the piece the nice lifted feeling, as well as help the orchestra stay together; however the dynamic contrast between the four sections was rather light. The use of a snare drum drastically changed this piece, it feels more like a slow waltz. The little use of dynamics, however, kept the melody from popping out as much as it should have. In the beginning of the piece everybody played the notes with space between then; however towards the end, a few of orchestra members played the notes smoothly and connected whereas the rest of the orchestra played the notes spaced. The intonation and a steady tempo was retained throughout the performance which gave this piece a focused tone. The violins and violas did an excellent job using full bows, but the cellos needed to use long bows so they can create a deep, rich, and crisp sound. This piece made the audience feel excited and eager to hear more because many of the audience members recognized this…
As a colleague of Dr. Jiang, I am aware of her enviable profile as a piano soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative pianist (a term replacing “accompanist” to describe the role the pianist plays in an instrumental or vocal recital performance). I am impressed not only by the high status venues that have sponsored her performances, such as New York’s Lincoln Center, but also by the exceptional musicians with whom she has shared the concert stage. She has performed chamber music and recital programs with a host of renowned performers that include violinist Itzhak Perlman, Cleveland Quartet violinist Donald Weilerstein, Kronos Quartet cellist Sunny Yang, and Emerson Quartet cellist Paul Watkins. Recently she performed a piano…
For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…
Background Claudette Colvin was a social justice leader who fought for civil rights. Colvin grew up with the Jim Crow laws, she grew up understanding that being black you had to be considered inferior to those who were white. Colvin never truly understood why people would sit quietly when their rights were being violated. Colvin was only 15-years-old, when she refused to give up her seat in the bus prior to Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat. Colvin protested through civil disobedience.…
2 from the twentieth century period and it has only one movement. At the beginning of the piece for the first time the conductor gives a speech the music players how the are very busy this period, then he thanks the audience and appreciate them because they were very good listener. After that, he gives a little of background about the piece. Furthermore, this piece begin with a unique combination which are the oboe with has the main melody, piano, and glockenspiel. The oboe player was very professional I can see how he engaged with instrument while he playing the oboe. However, the guiro is the first time I see it astonished me it has very unique sound I can recognize it between many instruments and it gives amazing tone to the rhythm. The rhythm of this piece is predictable. This piece is consonant even you can dance with the rhythm, after I listen to the piece I understand what the conductor mean when he says jokes in his speech about dancing in the aisle. Additionally, there was a solo piccolo it was very nice. However, I notice that at the end of every piece the conductor will make some players to stand up I think it mean that play very good then will let all the group to stands up.…
I went to Mr. O’Neal’s second jazz concert today, which took place at a little bit far but very nice jazz studio in San Pedro. There was a beautiful neighborhood nearby, and it was the first time I’ve ever been to San Pedro. I was kind of tired since I went there right after I got off from work, but I still be excited and couldn’t wait for the wonderful music. My friends and I had a seat before the concern really started, it was a warm and sweet little room. Then I looked at the little stage in front where Mr. O’Neal’s going to perform later, it was just fit to everything. I like the design of the stage: they had colorful lighting on five separate pieces pure white background , a new classic piano, a bright blue jazz drum which I like the best, and a set of red African drum, they really made me look forward to the show. My friend also ordered the pizza the Mr. O’Neal recommended, and we were ready to enjoy the concert!…
During my sophomore year in high school, I joined the St. Andrew Dung-Lac Lion Dance Association at my church and learned the art of lion dancing, a Vietnamese tradition. As a young boy, I used to watch these performances during the Lunar New Year and the Moon Festival, wishing to be in the lion prancing to the beat of the drums one day. Now that I was old enough to participate, I seized the opportunity to make my childhood dream a reality.…
