Chondroitin Research Paper
Glucosamine chondroitin MSM is a mixture of three compounds which are used to treat numerous diseases in the body, most commonly arthritis. 1. Glucosamine is an amino sugar which is naturally created in the body and has a vital role in the production of certain proteins and lipids. 2. Chondroitin is a derivative of chondrin, which is a nutrient found in all mammals. 3. Methyl Sulphynol Methane (MSM) is a essential mineral used by the body to preserve the immune system, stability of hormones, manage enzymes and support healthy joint function.

Chondroitin Sulfate is found in our cartilage. It is believed to bring fluid into the tissue, giving cartilage more flexibility, slowing cartilage decay and protects it many harmful enzymes. In supplement form it is derived from cattle and is paired with Glucosamine because they both assist in maintaining joint health. Chondroitin by itself has shown to improve joint function, ease pain, stabilize joint narrowing in the knee and control osteoarthritis in finger joints.

It is taken to alleviate the pain of arthritis by rebuilding cartilage in the body. Chondroitin specifically helps in slowing down the development of arthritis. Glucosamine is used in the body to help build cartilage. So together they aid in treating the inflammation caused due to arthritis. It helps in increasing the creation of hyaluronic acid, a component of synovial fluid, which helps in lubricating joints. MSM helps in balancing hormones and controlling the activity of enzymes in the body. These compounds are also believed to help in treatment of glaucoma, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart diseases, arthritis and

In his article featured in the global health magazine The Lancet, author Paul Creamer attempts to give an explanation of the causes and effects of osteoarthritis, which is one of the most common forms of arthritis to date. In his article Creamer describes the disease as “not a single disorder, but rather a group of overlapping distinct diseases” (Creamer, 1997, pg. 1) that are caused by both mechanical and biological events. Creamer claims that osteoarthritis “leads to a softening of the bone, fibrillation, ulceration, loss of articular cartilage, sclerosis and eburnation of subchondral bone” (Creamer, 1997, pg. 1) which can cause joint pain, morning stiffness, and loss of function in body parts containing the disease. There are a range of…

    Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the articular cartilage and is known as one of the most common forms of arthritis. OA results in chronic disability in its patients and compels an immense economic burden on its patients. Researchers have predicted that over the next ten years an estimated 67 million Americans over the age of 18 are going to be diagnosed with OA. Statistics like the erstwhile one motivate researchers investigating the pathomechanics of OA. Although pharmacological drugs exist which could reduce pain, they are palliative because they don’t intervene with the pathomechanical cause of this disease instead they merely reduce the effect of its symptoms. Only disease modifying drugs for osteoarthritis (DMOADs) could alter the pathomechanical cause of this disease and therefore provide permanent cures for the millions of patients suffering from OA. However, currently the development of DMOADs is extremely slow because of the lack of dependable biomarkers that can be used to detect early changes in OA. Biomarkers are indicators of certain biological states; they are characteristics which are objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of pharmacologic response to a therapeutic intervention. OA biomarkers assist researchers in diagnosis and assessment of severity of the disease. (Zolg and Langen [345-54])As DMOADs are developed and tested in clinical studies, reliable biomarkers are going to be necessary in order to assess the progression of OA. Improvements in the understanding of the cartilage’s biochemistry have been responsible for the increase in the number of studies testing molecules involved in the OA as biomarkers of OA. With the aid of biomarkers and an improved understanding of the biochemistry of cartilage, researchers studying OA can develop DMOADs which could permanently change the lives of millions of people suffering from the chronic inflammatory disease of…

Most of these drugs have been proven to be efficient when tested in animal subjects. The drugs are capable of slowing down the progression of the disorder and making the symptoms less prevalent. The two most effective drugs used are miconazole and clobetasol. These had the ability of “promoting precocious myelination in organotypic cerebellar slice cultures, and in vivo in early postnatal mouse pups” (Najm, F.J. et al). In addition, these drugs have a major effect in two different components of the disease. Miconazole allows the increment of oligodendrocytes and makes remyelination more likely to occur while clobetasol targets the immune system directly as a strong immunosuppressant. Differently from medical drugs, other methods used to alleviate symptoms are therapy treatments. Physical therapy is commonly used, as it helps stimulate muscle tissue allowing it to maintain mobility. Although long terms effects are rarely reported, there are many reports stating that exercises helps decrease the amount of limitations that multiple sclerosis present in the patients (Doring , A. et.…
