It’s funny how flexible and versatile music is. Music is thrash metal emanating from a pair of iPod headphones, with the intent of getting someone motivated for a long workout, and a soothing lullaby sung by a mother to her child. Music is the sunny chirpings of pretty morning melodies by the birds, and the soft pitter-patter of rain—nature’s music. And on May 4th, music was the choirs of CLC putting together all of the hard work of the semester for the few who are willing to listen. For me, choir music was always to be heard, but never to actually be listened to for any enjoyment. But that night, I was one of those willing few. Attending the College of Lake County Spring Choral Concert made me realize how essential it is to recognize the beauty in versatility in music.…

Pop music, music of populace, originated in the UK and USA. Pop music is not a genre in itself, but merely the music targeting mass audiences. The History of popular music was not about social phenomenon, music was all that mattered and being least resistant (Gray, : 104). There were two types of American pop music. The first one being the angle of concentration, focusing on artistic and historical themes. The second being responsible for everything that was considered to be important as a reminder (Spaeth, : xiv). The difference between pop music of the beginning of the decade was live shows that were instrumental and structural and the end of the decade was very studio collective with minimal imagination as the music sound highly enhanced (Derogatis, Kot: 29). In the beginning of this decade, the trends of rock and roll was sustained from the 50s era. Middle 60s drugs became popular to improvise with music and so mellow psychedelic rock had developed. This counterculture was narrowed down to the younger generation which joined a three day hippie festival giving peace and love called Woodstock (Gray, : 104). Pop was known as music such as blues rock, jazz , folk and later in the decade genre’s such as bubble gum pop, heavy metal and psychedelic rock became more popular. A few popular artists were Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Beach boys, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd and many more. Pop music was considered a key to life itself and the history of a nation (Spaeth,:3) In 1966 a cultural change had taken place as the mop top era was over ride and the beardy years had begun (Wilson, 266)…

-Typically, pop music centers on themes such as love and relationships. The themes of pop music also help to make the music accessible, as the songs are often about common experiences that most people will have at some point in their lives: having a romantic interest in someone, falling in love, breaking up, and other experiences associated with love. A pop song that uses this theme is “You and I” by Lady Gaga.…

    Exploring Popular Music

    • 1286 Words
    • 6 Pages

Popular music differs from other genres of music because with other genres of music they are constrained to that genre meaning that have to fit that group and really venture outside that box and still be called that genre. As for popular music, I believe it does just the opposite: it isn 't constrained, it doesn 't fit a model, it dares to be different, and it evokes all genres of music. One popular music genre is rock, rock music has gone though many changes in the recent years and has received countless backlash for those changes. I believe Richard Brookhiser said it best "Rock is a form of popular culture that aims downward instead of aiming up. Rather than aspiring, it despires" (Brookhiser, 385). I feel that Brookhiser said this because as that the century progresses and technology progresses we are no longer shocked. So popular rock artists try to push the limits of our society, but in doing so it brings the popular culture down. "If history repeats itself, and the unexpected always happens, how incapable must Man be of learning from experience"(Shaw). Popular rock music of today has had the same effect on older generations as it has had 50 year ago granted, the band names and styles of dress have changed, but the disapproval of the music hasn‘t. Michael Budds once said that " It can be argued, however, that the passion and energy expended in attempts to alter or suppress rock and roll expression have only spurred rockers to flaunt "objectionable" aspects of their music and worldview in a spirit of defiant celebration"(Budds, Pg. 392, 2). Historical Rock music was seen as a defiant celebration that people believed promoted sex, violence, and drugs. In some cases…
