Choreographers live for training new and aspiring students in the field of dance. They also communicate/entertain audiences with their creative ideas shown through their choreography. “Choreographers try to inspire students to follow in their footsteps and become choreographers.” (“Become a Choreographer”). They do this career since they have a huge passion for the art of dance.
Choreographers have very many responsibilities for this type of work. They must know and be able to teach different styles of dance like Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and all different kinds of dance. Choreographers are educators for the people who are willing to learn new things, and face all kinds of physical and mental challenges. They spend time performing/ showing movement to the dancers. is a big thing that choreographers have to teach their students, it can be tiring doing the same thing over and over again, but as choreographers they have to get the student have it in their system. Choreographers, if done for performances, have to get a full understanding of the director’s thoughts to execute it the right way. A responsibility for choreographers are the readiness for the extra hours of work, It’s for the long nights coming up with new choreography for the students or different kinds of challenging moves.
The key skills and abilities for choreographers can get difficult to master.
They need creativity, for all these ideas of new and improved choreography for the students to perform and improve on. Also, The ability to make routines for events/performances, it isn’t always behind the curtain, there are some dances they have to create to entertain the audience. Choreographers need to have some kind of open mind to new ideas that come from the dancers, directors, and maybe some of the audience, which could influence the piece in a positive way. Lastly, choreographers should be able to absorb creativity/artistic influences from other forms of art such as actual art work. Education for people to become choreographers can be tough, but if really wanted, can easily be achieved. Many years of dance training are required for them since they are working with dancing and need a comfortable experience with the art. Four years of college is recommended for people to become choreographers because in those years, students will learn/intern at a dance studio to get the experience to see if this is really what they really want to do. During those four of college it is recommended that aspiring choreographers study all kind of different styles of dance to have a broad lane. It is also recommended that aspiring choreographers take a minor in business if they want to open up their own studio instead of working for someone.
There are very different characteristics with the job as choreographers than other jobs. The environment for choreographers is indoor since there is a special flooring used for dancers. Choreographers may get well known in the entertaining industry, companies may want them to choreograph something for their company, which means traveling is an option. All these characteristics are based on the studio’s popularity in town and outside of town. Also, there are some slow times during the dance season, like in the summer where everyone is on vacation and relaxing, not at the dance studio working. There can also be fast times for choreographers, like in the fall since school is picking back up and students need something to do as their after school activity.
There can be major positives with becoming choreographers. Choreographers have the opportunity to be original with the choreography and to inspire dancers in the studio, even outside of the studio. There is an opportunity to work with new and different people, learning and observing the different types of dancers and people. Choreographers see the dancers growing up and changing into amazing dancers, and great people in general, all because of the choreographers’ personality and teachings. There is also a great moment when choreographers see that “lightbulb” moment students receive when they perform the movement an exemplary form.
Working as choreographers is great, but it can also have its downside. There is a lot of stress with this career, whether it be due to competition with other studios in town or trying to settle drama between students at the studio. According to Lender, who is retired choreographer, says “Stress is the cause to wrenching headaches”. Why this is important is because choreographers need to stay at their best. Typically, choreographers don’t receive the recognition they should receive for their hard work. Which is a downside if the performers using the choreography receives all the recognition. Choreographer have a lack of spare time, which can lead to difficulties with their performance teaching and outside of teaching. It can cause decreasing is social aspects, since the choreographer is working most days. The lack of spare time can also cause overwork in the body, which can cause small but often health issues. Lastly, there is the feeling of letting the dancers down, like if a dance fails to perform well enough, all the blame goes towards the choreographer.
Going down the career path of choreographers can be a struggle, but can be easily done. Making it in the entertaining industry is a high 70%, but making it in the dance industry is a bit more difficult at 60%. There can be simplicity to the people who have the ambition to go after their dreams of becoming choreographers, wanting to start their own studio. People can become choreographers when they are ready to, with enough dance experience. The industry fairly linear, so is will mostly go up from where it is now compared to other careers that could fail in an instant.
Every career has a salary, that means choreographers do too. A big part of choreographers salary is recession due to so many expenses towards the studio. The big low is because of the expenses towards the studio, choreographers are paying double the cost of a house since it is a separate building. On average, choreographers make $44,000 to $90,000 excluding all the expenses, but the salary can depend all on the studio’s popularity. Since it may vary due to social popularity of the studio on how great the choreography is to an audience. It may come down, but it can go back up the next dance season.
The outlook of the career as choreographers is decent for a not often considered career choice. The growth is average as other careers, but for a not often chosen career, it is an improvement compared to other careers. There still may not be job openings or opening up a studio and expecting it to be successful might not be the best at the moment. The is a 5% growth between the year 2014 to 2024 in this industry, which isn’t much but it is still an improvement from the last years. There may be a struggle to find opportunities with this career such as finding internships, jobs, building for sale. It can be very difficult but the career has a bright future.
There are very similar careers if becoming choreographers is not what people are interested in but is highly recommended over these options. Performers are people who have a career in entertaining audiences with their own talents. A positive to becoming performers is that they do receive more recognition for their entertainment, but a negative is that it can easily become a failure if act is not popular. There is also the career as a performance writer, which are people who write plays and/or musicals. A positive to performance writers is that their shows can become really big and well known all around the country, but a negative of choosing this career is how much stress that will go into writing a successful, entertaining show.
Choreographers work hard to help dancers become the best they can be. They see potential in all students, not giving up on any students. They are always there and won’t be going away anytime soon. This job is recommended for hard workers who can get creative.
