Abstract
This paper explores “Christian Coaching: Helping Others Turn Potential into Reality” by Gary R. Collins. We read in this book how coaching is defined, what coaching is and is not, and look at the methods of practices that are utilized by good coaches. We also read about various skills used in the coaching practice and how the skills are implemented in coaching sessions. Goal setting, strategies and obstacles are addressed as the coach encourages the client in reaching their vision. Collins (2009), a licensed clinical psychologist, wrote a book titled, “Christian Coaching: Helping Others Turn Potential into Reality,” and introduced principles, tools and skills to help Christian coaches help other people through identifying their strengths, building confidence, increasing their skills, discovering their life purpose and so much more. Collins (2009) started the book by looking at what coaching is and how it is defined. As the coaching field is relatively new and still undefined in many individual’s minds, Collins wanted to give a framework around the concept, career and purpose of coaching. I felt relieved to know and better understand the methods and practices of coaching. Throughout my reading, I felt as though I learned a lot of skills to personally continue growing in and developing. My reading also challenged me in finding the highest standard of coaching to grow into and go by as I work with clients in coaching sessions. I felt inspired to look at the coaching questions and methods in my own life to grow in my own personal awareness of myself and understand where God has positioned me.
