Chronicle of a Death Foretold, a book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez takes place in Colombia. This book take you along a murder of a man named Santiago Nasar. The book takes you throughout the events leading to the day of his death and after. As a reader I asked myself, what is the purpose of this book? What did Gabriel Garcia Marquez want his readers to take away from this book? I as a reader saw many things that made me think deeper into the book. We see many characters in the book and you can see how they each had an impact in the murder. I could also see the culture of Latin America and the customs that they had. Another thing I saw was the importance of religion. The first thing I took away was learning about the culture of Latin America.
This can also go along with the cultural difference. In the book we can see the religion of Catholicism. This was very common religion in Latin America. In fact it was the main religion in Colombia until 1991 and still is one of the most common religions. The catholic church is very strict on things. Going with the virginity before being married the catholic church supported that. They believe that having sex before marriage is a sin and if you were to do it, you would be sent to hell. Religion in this book had a huge impact on the characters and reflect the culture. “On the day they were going to kill him, Santiago Nasar got up at five-thirty in the morning to wait for the bishop was coming on”(Narrator 3). The communities event on the Monday of Santiago Nasar’s death day is the wait for the arrival of the bishop. Santiago then proceeds to leave the house dressed in attire that is appropriate for seeing the bishop. The book states over and over the customs of religion in the community. It shows the importance of religion, with its traditions and sanctions, is connected to the idea of honor and upholding it. It also shows the importance of religion to the community and shows the standards and how they respect
