Chronicle of A Death Foretold: Moral Corruption

Moral Corruption The reason that Santiago Nasar met his death was because of moral corruption. He was morally incorrect about the actions that he took. He hurt many people in his clouded thoughts which resulted in chaotic and perverse actions. Even he was a victim to his own creation of madness, and for this Santiago paid the consequences. Santiago Nasar is the main character in the book “Chronicle of a Death Foretold,” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Marquez’s style of writing gave a deeper meaning to what and how morally corrupt Santiago Nasar was. “Victoria Guzman needed almost twenty years to understand that a man accustomed to killing defenseless animals could suddenly express such horror.” (pg.10) Right here Victoria who is the maid is threatening the main character because he was going to harass her daughter. The author’s style of writing is to have a back flash or memory that gives us a glimpse into Nasar’s moral corruption because he is very contradictive in his ways. The contradictive actions that he does is acting as if he never haunted an animal before even though he has, and when he sees an animal being slaughter in front of him he is stunned. The author also shows the reader another time when Santiago Nasar’s judgment was very poor in the decisions he had made. “I warned him: ‘A falcon who chases a warlike crane can only hope for a life of pain.’ But he didn’t listen to me, dazzled by Maria Alejandrina Cervantes’s illusory calls.” (pg.65) Santiago Nasar fell in love with the town’s best whore and everyone that cared about him told him to keep away from her. Since Santiago had clouded thoughts he did not listen, and his dad had to ground him for his own good. “A falcon who chases a warlike crane can only hope for a life of pain.” (pg.65) This quote foreshadows what Santiago’s destiny would turn out to be. The reader knows what the ultimate end result would be for Santiago, but when he was alive he did not know. The quote warns him to stop doing
