443,000 deaths a year, the causalities of a war? The death total of a pandemic? No, this is the number of people who knowingly poison and kill themselves with cigarettes. Cigarettes are responsible for more deaths then HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined in the United States. Smoking harms nearly every organ in a person’s body yet it still remains legal. Smoking increases risk of several deadly diseases and contains several lethal poisons. All in all, cigarettes should be made illegal in the United States.
To start off, smoking cigarettes raises the risk of getting several life threatening diseases. A person who smokes is 23 times more likely to develop lung cancer, having a stroke is 4 times as likely and a person is 12 times more likely to die of chronic bronchitis or emphysema.
Along with all of that, cigarettes contain 51 kinds of known carcinogens or cancer causing substances. Some of these include arsenic which is found in rat poison, hydrogen cyanide which was used in concentration camp gas chambers and tar which is what makes up roads. But people continue to smoke them for a little buzz and because of another drug called nicotine which is extremely addicting.
As you can see cigarettes do much more harm than good. A mass petition and letters sent to congressmen should force the government to act in some way towards the matter. Making cigarettes illegal will not eliminate smoking, but it will certainly help cut it down. Illegalizing cigarettes may be the extra incentive that smokers need to quit and I am confident in that.
Imagine walking into a store and not being able to buy cigarettes, yes some people will spend the extra money to buy them illegally, but many will not. And those people will live much longer and that is all the world can ask for.
So take action. Write a letter, start a petition, march in front of cigarette factories. Every little thing helps.
