Cinder Research Paper
Cinder is a teenage cyborg who lives in New Beijing with her stepmother and stepsisters. Her stepmother demands that Cinder support the family with her skills as a mechanic, which is just fine by Cinder; it's her gift. There's nothing she can't fix, besides herself. Cinder is part cyborg, and she keeps outgrowing her mechanical parts. She has the money to buy new ones, but her stepmother takes all of her income "for the family." Cinder's father died, and she has no real obligation to her stepfamily, except for the tiny little fact that no one else would take a cyborg in. So Cinder spends her days covered in grease and thankful for what little she has, until one day she meets someone who changes everything. Kai, prince, and soon to be emperor, of the Eastern Commonwealth. Kai came to the village in disguise to have Cinder fix a palace android, which she rushes to do; anything to help Kai in this difficult time. The prince's father is slowing dying of the plague- letumosis, that is ravaging the rest of the commonwealth, and the world.
The Royal advisors are scrambling for a cure, but there isn't one yet. One day, one of Cinder's step sisters, Peony, exhibits signs of the plague. There had been an outbreak at the market where Cinder

The moon people, Lunars, are on the brink of being at war with the the people of Earth, unless Prince Kai does exactly as Lunar Queen Levana demands. Kai's only plan of attack is to find the rightful heir to the Lunar Throne, Princess Selene, who allegedly died in a fire that Kai believes Levana set. Not that he could ever confront Levana about it. The Lunars are born with a glamour; a shield that plays with the minds of their opponents and lulls them into thinking that the Lunar behind it is tranquil and well-meaning. But Cinder can see through the glamour, which makes her a threat to Levana, and she will stop at nothing to have her

I read the book Cinder by Marissa Meyer. This book is the first book of The Lunar Chronicles. The most interesting part of the book was that the author put a lot of twists and turns at the end. My least favorite part of the book was when the main character, Cinder, had witness her stepsister’s death. The author wanted us to learn do not judge from the outside but judge what is on the inside. I like this book because the author puts twist on the Cinderella story. Other student would like this book by how the story is in the future. My question, ’’Is she going to escape?”…

This month I read the second book of the Lunar Chronicles series, called Scarlet. The theme of this book is perseverance all the 3 main characters in this book are persevering to achieve a goal. Since Cinder escaped prison, Queen Levana started accusing Emperor Kai of his lack of security. She gives Kai 3 days to find Cinder or else Luna will attack Earth (Meyer pg 42- 48). Kai is persevering to find Cinder but it is very hard because she could be anywhere in the whole solar system. Meanwhile, Cinder is trying to continue on her mission to defeat Levana. She is going to Europe to find a woman who will guide her through her journey and knows her secret about being Princess Selene (Meyer pg 182). On this journey Cinder goes through many problems like almost getting caught by Kai’s troops, and she almost killed herself hooking herself into her spaceships auto control system in order to prevent it from crashing (Meyer pg. 183 & 243). Meanwhile, Scarlet is trying to find her grandmother. First she found the location of the kidnappers who had taken her grandmother…

Cantor links the plague to the War of the Roses. Edward's son, John of Gaunt, was married to Blanch Grosmont, who inherited her father's huge estate when he died of the plague (p.56). John of Gaunt became duke of Lancaster, which gave him as much power as the rest of the family. John of Gaunt's heir, Henry of Lancaster, seized the crown from his cousin, Richard…

The Plague is a disease caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis. It is responsible for killing millions of people in the Middle Ages. However, today we have a cure for it. The author Giovanni Boccacio wrote The Decameron to report, warn, and record the disease. He wanted people to be aware of what happened. The disease spread from place to place, animal to human, human to human. The people around it were aware that it was spreading and understood that is was “contagious”. As a result, they got rid of the infected bodies after they passed and kept the sickened away by barring them from the city. There was no cure for the disease that they could find, which is why so many people died. I think by saying “the nature of the disease did not allow for any cure” might simply mean they put their faith into God and it was not accepted. As for “ignorance of physicians”,…

It is possible that the plague is merely exacerbating tensions already present with in the village but it does so to an unprecedented degree. Thus, certain individuals of a somewhat antisocial and self-serving bent find their actions and inclinations magnified by the advent of the Plague. Josiah Bont, who is Anna’s abusive father, becomes a gravedigger, willing to pursue homicide as a stimulus to his profits; his wife, Aphra, shamelessly exploits the anxieties of her fellow villagers for monetary gain by pretending to be the ghost of the deceased Anys Gowdie. In what is, perhaps, a less culpable fashion, David Burton seizes the opportunity to advance his own interest at the expense of Merry Wickord, whose family mine has been left open to claim by the death of her parents. Instances such as these suggest that Michael Mompellion’s assertion that “the Plague will make heroes of us all”, however optimistic, is not well founded. Even more strikingly, the readiness of the villagers to turn against Mem and Anys Gowdie, whose service as healers have been much in demand, indicates that the plague deepens the rifts already exists in the community. As Jon Millstone comments, there is a grave danger that the time “will make monsters of us all”. Therefore it is the villagers own nature which acts as the catalyst for further tragic…

While most of Europe was affected, the city of Siena, Italy, was struck by the plague in the spring of A.D. 1348. The victims of the plague would experience swellings beneath their armpits, and on their groin. Once a person was infected with the plague, it is recorded that they would die so suddenly and without warning, that they could be mid-sentence when they dropped dead. So many people were dying at such a rapid rate, the people of Siena could not dig graves quick enough, so they had huge mass graves filled with the dead, which only brought more rats, and let the plague linger. If a person was lucky enough to not be infected, many would abandon their families and leave them for dead in the hopes they could avoid the plague. Those who chose to stay often gave in to their pleasures, locking themselves in their houses, and having grand parties, so they could die happy. The plague hit Siena so hard, that the ongoing project of enlarging the cathedral was halted indefinitely showing just how grave the situation was. When the plague finally left Siena, the total dead is estimated to be around 80,000 people, 30,000 of which were under the age of twenty, which left only around 10,000 men in the city. Though Siena was hit extremely hard by the plague, few escaped from it unscathed, not even one of the most powerful groups in Europe at the time avoided heavy damage.…

The toxic elements that are in coal ash are severe on both the human health and the environment. One of the most sickening parts about the coal ash waste is that most storage facilities for coal ash do not have any sort of waterproof liner to prevent these toxins from leaking into groundwater and contaminating many aquifers and public waterways. The risks for contamination of groundwater due to coal ash is more likely than many might realize. There are many at risk. Anyone who is near a coal ash impoundment is in danger. There are many coal ash impoundment locations in the Southeast. There are some in North Carolina. The impoundments that are lagoons rely on earthen dams to hold back ash and wastewater. The dams could either leak, or even…

Knock. Knock. Knock. “Hide! It’s probably the church people,” my mom yelled. They came every Saturday at around 2:00 and we ran upstairs. At that time in my life I had absolutely no connection to God or knew anything about my religion. Like someone once said, “being Catholic is like a gym membership, you belong but you never go.” My parents and I went to church but we were not listening or understood what it meant; we went only to make my grandmother happy. But after my uncle’s death my mother turned to the church. Overtime I came to understand what it means to be Catholic and its teachings. Trying to be a good Catholic has made me more accepting, loving, compassionate, and non judgmental. My faith has helped me overcome tough times and it…
