workplace that I was constantly surrounded by. Reporting accidents, injuries and unsafe equipment, to a supervisor or department head were responsibilities that I as an employee was warned about. By working at SilverCity I got to be in situations in which I faced injuries or harm to myself and that incorporated the safety programs that were provided. Considering that there are many priority safety programs, a company like Cineplex who has thousands of employees working for them and millions of guests coming in yearly has a big responsibility to provide the best safety programs for everyone and ensure that everything operates correctly and everyone is satisfied. By having the experience in working for this corporation, I believe that the top 3 priority safety programs that should be considered are inspection programs, investigation programs and lastly the training and education programs.
Cineplex does have these programs in place.
As previously mentioned, a huge corporation like Cineplex is in their best interest to have programs like these incorporated in their company so that all requirements are answered. Working at SilverCity, managers and team leaders deal with many situations, they have the obligation to make sure that people are using protected gear like gloves when handling hot food or when cleaning specific areas like the fryer. Regulations are made towards the required equipment worn by the employees as well. Inspection programs are usually decided to ensure an investigation is periodically completed on a planned basis with the intent to identify unsafe conditions in the workplace. One of the types of inspection that can relate to the Cineplex’s inspection program is the unplanned informal inspection in which can be encouraged by training and education. As an employee were given specific training in hazardous areas, such as the areas around machines with cables running from behind even how to properly use the machine was a huge part of knowing the job as well. In an unplanned informal inspection the managers would keep records of hazards that were identified and responded to resolve the issues. We had safety checklists in each unit that had guidelines that we had to follow, we had to make sure we went over everything in the checklist by checking off everything and writing notes if there was a problem in that specific unit. Another essential safety program is accident investigation. The main purpose of these investigations is to determine what happened, how it happened, why it happened and then determine the truth of the facts and how to prevent the accident from ever happening again. Without an investigation program, Cineplex prevention of accidents is nearly impossible. There two extensions that exist within the investigation phase in which we looked at accidents and incidents that occurred. Accidents are defined as unplanned events that disturb the completion of an activity and incident refers to an unexpected event that did no cause injury or damage but had a possibility it could have. In Cineplex the investigations took place by the managers who were more experienced in these situations and more fully educated of the work environment and the procedures. When equipment’s and the food machines stopped working or had a problem with, the managers would try to fix the problems themselves or call an agency to bring someone in to fix it. At the end of every day, there were reports written on how the day went, especially if there were serious accidents or incidents that happened through out the day that was also taken down for future use.
The last safety program that I mentioned Cineplex has in place is the training and education program. This is the most effective part in the OHS system and especially for a corporation like Cineplex. Education and training are an important part of any effective OHS system especially in companies. SilverCity has training and education as one of their most important aspects of learning the job. Right when I was hired I had to do an online assessment in order to even start training. They provided e-training online so that I could learn from the example they give me so that when I actually go into work I know bits and pieces of what I had learned from the online training. They had given you examples of how to use the till properly to how to use the popcorn machines and other sort of machines as well as how to solve problems with guests and what the best solution would be. After passing the online part that was when the real training began. I had already known the knowledge behind some of the things they showed us so it made the job easier for me and I became more comfortable using the equipment. SilverCity trained the employees on everything that needed to be known; from knowing the fire escape roots to the equipment that shouldn’t be touched nor handled. For training to be effective the training needs analysis was to be completed before implementation. The managers used the training needs analysis to link the training and educational needs that we needed to know to the health and safety management system and the health and safety risks that we were warned about as well.
For Cineplex to operate as a corporation nationwide, it is their responsibility to fulfill these required safety programs.
For them to operate there must be necessarily have these programs intact because these are the fundamentals and core for a management system to work. All three safety programs demonstrate an important trait in which a large company should provide to all employees. Especially working for SilverCity I experienced my own share of injuries and incidents, however there were solutions to everything. Records were taken down and yearly meetings were in place for employees to go over the new rules and safety procedures. These are things most companies should be able to do for their employees and Cineplex provides us with information that we need to know in order to keep working at this job safely. This is why the three priority safety programs that I named are to be the company’s main focuses and are programs that are already in place in the
company.
