Circadian Rhythms
Circadian rhythm sleep disorders are very disruptive to a person's health, and are a common occurrence in humans. By definition, circadian rhythm is the cyclical 24 hour period of human biological activity where people usually sleep for eight hours and are awake for sixteen. There are two main types of circadian rhythm disorders: exogenous and endogenous. Examples of exogenous disorders include shift worker disorder and jet lag disorder. Some endogenous disorders include advanced sleep phase disorder, irregular sleep-wake rhythm, and the non-24-hour sleep-wake syndrome. The journal article “How to assess circadian rhythm in humans: A review of literature” reviews the effect of circadian rhythm on epilepsy, along with the methodology of measuring the circadian rhythm in humans and how to assess it. The article “Practice Parameters for the Clinical Evaluation and Treatment of Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders” discusses the backgrounds of the disorders listed above and how to properly diagnose them.

The main difference is in the structure and organization of the articles. “Practice Parameters for the Clinical Evaluation and Treatment of Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders” is organized by an introduction, then the methods section, followed by results and recommendations, and finally by the summary and future research section. Each of these large sections is broken down into small, detailed paragraphs making it easier to read and understand. “How to assess circadian rhythm in humans: A review of literature” is organized by an introduction, then the topic of circadian rhythm, a section on interindividual differences, how to measure the circadian rhythm, and finally the summary. All of these sections are each a very long paragraph making it difficult to read and follow

    One example of disruption of biological rhythms is due to shift work and shift lag. This disrupts your sleeping pattern because it means you are required to be alert at night, so need to sleep during the day. This reverses and disrupts your circadian rhythm, becoming desynchronised where it is no longer entrained by EZ’s. There are many consequences of desynchronisation such as sleep deprivation. Shift workers find it hard to sleep during the day because of the EZ’s such as light and sound disturbances that keep you awake. This means shift workers find it even more difficult to stay awake at night time because they have had a poor quality daytime sleep. This then affects their alertness. Night workers often experience a circadian ‘trough’ of decreased alertness during their shifts. For example Boivin found that cortisol levels are at their lowest between 12 and 4am, which is the primetime a night worker, would be working. This means they have low alertness and decreases the efficiency of their job. There are also many effects on health due to shift work. A significant relationship has been found between shift work and organ disease. For example, Knutsson found that people who worked shift work for more than 15 years were likely to develop heart disease than a non-shift worker. This may be due to the direct effect of desynchronisation in the circadian rhythm.…
