City Of Ember Summary
Summary

Lina and Doon were just your average 12- year olds, except they lived in the City of Ember. The City of Ember was a carefully constructed man-made city. The city was built to protect the human civilization for a span of time. The city ran just a little differently. For example, the students graduated school at the age of 12 and were assigned jobs randomly. On assignment day, Lina drew Pipeworks Laborer. Disappointed, she switched with Doon, who was also not satisfied with his new assignment. Doon was mad because he thought it was a useless job, so he eagerly traded with Lina.

They each learned important information. Lina learned that the citizens were scared of the lights going out and Doon learned that the generator was breaking

Not only did she forget about the child, she was determined to find something that her grandfather, a former mayor, hid away. After tons of search the box was finally found, unfortunately, Poppy found it first and chewed up the piece of paper.

With the help of Doon, Lina deciphered what the content of the paper was. They found out that the paper included instructions left by the builders on how to exit the city to safety when the time would come. The two also found out the mayor used a clerk named Looper to steal and store food and supplies that were vital to the city. The evil mayor tried to arrest them for accusing him of theft from the city. The two decided to take Poppy and follow the directions to wherever they lead. After a long trip by the river and an ascent to the outer world, they were astonished.

On the last day of their final year, which was called Assignment Day, they were given jobs to do.” When I read this in the text I was surprised. This is because I am used to hearing that I will graduate from school at eighteen. In addition to graduating school at twelve, the most bizarre part is how they are assigned the jobs. Typically one has to apply for jobs and go for interviews. In the contrary, that is not how it is done in Ember. People in charge actually put names of available jobs in a bag and whatever the graduate draws, is the job they have to stick with for the next three years until it is time for an evaluation. The text states on page 8 “He picked up the bag and pulled open the drawstring. ‘So. Let us begin. Simple procedure. Come up one at a time. Reach into this bag. Take one slip of paper. Read it out loud.’” I find this procedure of getting a job very surprising and bizarre.

In the City of Ember Lina’s grandmother died and this made me sympathetic and sad. On page 139 it states, “Lina went fearfully into her grandmother’s room. She found her very pale and very still, all the life went out of her” With my knowledge I knew that this meant that she was dead. When one finds out that someone dies it is normal for people to feel sympathetic, sad, and even cry, that's exactly how I felt. A part

According to the James-Lange theory of emotion, this feeling of sadness comes from your body’s physiological reaction to the news. Upon hearing about Fluffy’s death, your brain sends a signal to your vagus nerves, stimulating them, and in turn causing that classic sorrowful feeling of tightness in your gut and heart. Your lacrimal glands are concurrently sent an alert causing tears to start falling. These physical reactions are…
