Peaceful protests continue to effectively spark change in law. Famous leaders Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela have demonstrated that peaceful resistance against laws can positively impact a free society.
Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most, if not the most, famous civil rights leader the world has ever seen. Gandhi was known for organizing boycotts against the British institutions in India. One of the most famous was the Salt march which was a protest against Britain's Salt acts. Gandhi not only had a positive impact on India, but on the world. He led one of the largest civil rights movements in the United States. Through his peaceful protests and negotiations with the government, Dr. King inspired the civil rights act of 1964 which made it illegal to treat people differently because the color of their skin. King demonstrates how peaceful disobedience is the most effective way to positively impact a society. If it was not for Dr. King, millions of Americans would be without basic human rights. Similar to Dr. King, famous human rights advocate Nelson Mandela peacefully fought for similar goals in South Africa.
Nelson Mandela led countless peaceful protests all around Africa in the fight to end Apartheid. Mandela made it his life's work to end the reign of an oppressive regime and made many sacrifices. Mandela was arrested for his opposition to the government. He spent 27 years in jail for his participation in the anti Apartheid campaigns. In 1990 Mandela was released from prison and four years later became South Africa's first black president. If not for Nelson Mandela and his civil disobedience to a corrupt government, South Africa might still be run by a racist majority.
