In the years following the Civil War, the South needed to be seriously reformed from the political, social, and economic standpoints of society. The demise of King Cotton called for a new economic standard in the former Confederate states. The Union League’s migration into the southern United States became the main vice for freed slaves who remained in the South and wished to politically organize themselves. The creation of the Freedmen’s Bureau was able to assist the emancipated slaves intended to serve as a sort of welfare agency. However, with the Compromise of 1877, these reforms were mostly eradicated and the ideals for equal rights among races wouldn’t return to the premise of American history for another century.…

This allowed African Americans, previously in servitude, to gain protection and certain liberties that they weren’t allowed prior to the Civil War. Of course, most white men were outraged that black people were allowed such freedoms and “luxuries” at their expense. “For 1864 and 1865, the Freedman’s Bureau cost the tax-payers of the Nation, at least Twenty-Five Millions of Dollars.” This portrays that the Freedman’s Bureau is causing a severe issue nationwide, when in reality the problem is rooted in the white-supremacist male ethnographic…

In constructive discharge an employee resigns when they have been subjected to unlawful discrimination. The employee in this case was employed before the change in policy in shift work. Before the policy change, the production shifts were Monday to Friday. With the new policy the production team works a rotating shift schedule where at times the schedule rotates to work on Saturday and Sunday. The policy then discriminates against this employee because he is required to work on a religious holy day. The other issue at hand is that there are positions with the office staff that continue to work Monday to Friday. The production staff is being singled out to change their shift work when others still maintain the Monday to Friday schedule. This is intolerable to the employee since they do have the right to not be discriminated on basis of religion. Not everyone in the company has had their schedule changed and due to the change the employee left the company right after the change in policy.…

The time from 1865 - 1877 was called the Reconstruction period. Abraham Lincoln started planning for the reconstruction of the South during the Civil War, he wanted to bring the Nation back together as quickly as possible and in 1863 he offered his plan for Reconstruction which required that the States new constitutions prohibit slavery. In January 1865, Congress proposed an amendment to the Constitution, which would abolish slavery in the United States. On December 18, 1865, Congress ratified the Thirteenth Amendment formally abolishing slavery. The freed slaves still didn’t have citizenship and wanted wages, real estate, and voting rights. Black codes were adopted to regulate or inhibit the migration of free African-Americans to the mid-west. Southern legislatures passed laws that restricted the civil rights of the emancipated former slaves. Other states quickly adopted their own versions of the codes, some of which were so restrictive that they resembled the old system of slavery such as forced labor for various offenses. Congress passed an act in March 1865 to establish the Freedmen’s Bureau, which was organized to provide relief and assistance to the former slaves, including health services, educational services, and abandoned land services. In 1866, the Civil Rights Act was passed by Congress, which outlined a number of civil liberties including the right to make contracts, own and sell property and receive equal treatment under
the law. Congress passed the Fourteenth Amendment in 1867. The amendment was designed to provide citizenship and civil liberties to the recently freed slaves. The first Reconstruction Act was passed by Congress in March 1867. Five military districts each under the leadership of a U.S. general were carved out in the south and new elections were held which allowed the vote to black males. In addition to the Reconstruction Acts, Congress also passed a series of bills in 1867 to limit President Johnson’s power,…

When Congress established the Freedman's Bureau, it seems as if there was not enough to provide the necessities to grant full success to southern black and white people. May of 1865, just six weeks after taking office, President Andrew Johnson revealed his Reconstruction plan. Johnson hoped to form new state governments from those loyal to the Union and issued an amnesty proclamation plan for the restoration of North Carolina. Johnson’s main goal was to limit the political power of rebel leaders, to protect the former slaves and plan for their social and economic advancement, and to establish black suffrage (voting rights). Johnson did this by renewing the Freedmen's Bureau charter. The Freedmen's Bureau was created by the U.S. Congress near the end of the Civil War as an agency to deal with the enormous humanitarian crisis brought about by the war. The Freedmen's Bureau was envisioned as an agency wielding enormous power over the South. In May of 1865, President Johnson outlined his agenda to reunite the broken and divided nation. Johnson's plan started with the pardoning of Southern whites, and then he appointed them to positions of Governors. The Governors could then select whomever they wanted to be their Delegates, and of course, they chose members of the old elite for these powerful positions. The attempt made by Johnson to appease the South was successful, however it resulted in violent reprisals against former slaves, and turned the Northern Republicans against Johnson.…

Many people around the world know the United States for its “freedom and equality for all.” What fewer people know is the long, violent, and complex journey that it took millions of Americans to make that statement apply to them. Up until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 the United States was a segregated nation, dividing the “white-privileged” majority and the mix-colored minorities. From African Americans, to Chicanos, to Asian Americans, and various other ethnic groups, the journey that these minority Americans faced was filled with struggles, torment, and humiliation. Despite these obstacles, they continued to fight for what they believed was right, and that was to have the civil and political rights that were privileged to the white, majority extended to them.…
