This allowed African Americans, previously in servitude, to gain protection and certain liberties that they weren’t allowed prior to the Civil War. Of course, most white men were outraged that black people were allowed such freedoms and “luxuries” at their expense. “For 1864 and 1865, the Freedman’s Bureau cost the tax-payers of the Nation, at least Twenty-Five Millions of Dollars.” This portrays that the Freedman’s Bureau is causing a severe issue nationwide, when in reality the problem is rooted in the white-supremacist male ethnographic…

In order to understand the cases that brought about the drastic change in the interpretation of the 14th Amendment, the three clauses of the 14th Amendment must be understood. These clauses help define what it means to be a U.S. citizen. The privileges or immunities clause was first written in Article IV section two. It was then written again in the 14th Amendment after slavery was abolished in order for equal protection guarantee. The federal government wanted to insure that states respected the rights and freedoms of former slaves. In the first section of the 14th Amendment it states, “no state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United states.” This clause was written so that…

Now this first portion of this amendment left African Americans subject to to the people of the state. The people who were not of the state could break these laws based on their own accusations. The second portion of the 14th amendment it basically says that the state could not deny any person of life, property, or liberty the right of equal protection. Which still left a loophole in the system. If the laws were broken in any form or fashion the African Americans would be deprived of their rights.…

Constitutionally, the end of the Civil War opened lots of new doors for how to handle the assimilation of African-Americans into the country as freedmen. After the emancipation proclamation and the passage of the 13th amendment, the question of what rights and what limitations, if any, should be imposed on the former slaves. Congress responded with the 14th and 15th amendments, allowing the freedmen citizenship and suffrage. After Lincoln’s assassination and Johnson’s taking up of the presidency, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866 which protected the civil rights of all citizens as stated in the 14th amendment, this was geared notably toward blacks so state governments couldn’t take their rights away through some obscure loophole.…

Since the bill of rights, the 14th Amendment is perhaps the most important amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Although the 13th Amendment is very significant because it abolishes slavery, the 14th Amendment provided citizenship for the former slaves and provided the same legal benefits as the rest of the Americans. Also, the 14th Amendment can be seen as a foundation for follow on Amendments and policies that were passed to remove restrictions on voting by other races, allow women to vote and every other policy change to ensure equality among U.S. citizens regardless of race, gender, or religious beliefs. As of the three post-Civil War Reconstruction Amendments, the 14th Amendment was intended to protect former slaves and allow for equality…

After the murder of Abraham Lincoln, the United States was left without a wise leader, in this panic and loss of a president, Andrew Johnson was elected. Johnson was an Unionist and was hated, for his excessive use of his pardoning power, by the Radicals, state governments and moderate Republicans. Southerns would elect leaders that served the confederacy and that would instal “Black codes”, these codes would beat down African American’s civil rights and push them to being slaves again. From violences against African Americans, Yankees and Unionists, the 14 Amendment was produced. The Fourteenth Amendment enabled every American citizen rights that states had to respect and honor.
