From 1861 to 1865, the United States experienced 4 years of civil war that divided the country until well after the conflict ended. The antecedents of this war were a series of laws that the North implemented to the South in 1860. Lincoln was in charge of the government and the conflict was related to slavery abolition and protectionist measures that affected the southern economy. In 1861, eleven southern states separated and formed the Confederation. When the war began there were few military leaders and each one supported their own states. The most prominent would be Robert E. Lee in the South and Ulysses S. Grant in the North.
