The Ever-Changing Role Of Technology During The American Civil War
As technology has progressed throughout history, one of the main factors to technology progressing has been wars. From the days of fighting in Early Times where battles were fought with masses of men taking over territories to today where a button can be pushed from 35,000 feet in the air and drop a bomb to destroy a city, wars have had an impact on history and technology as a whole. There have been many changes to the way a military member viewed society in his ever-changing role any many different technologies used to be successful in winning wars and the effect the military member had on society.

The musket that was very common during the American Revolutionary Wars was now improved on. The rifled musket could now effectively shoot accurately at 500 yards. This allowed troops to stay further back than normal which had a large strategic impact and an impact on the soldier’s daily life. Before the Civil War, troops traveled by foot or from animals. During the Civil War, the railroad was of great use for soldiers. The railroads allowed the soldiers to arrive quicker to their destinations and also allowed for supplies to be retrieved quicker. The acceleration of supplies being sent to troops allowed armies to be larger with an increase from 30,000 men to 100,000 men. Another advantage to the railroad was that troops could travel to other battles that may have been losing. The troops heard about these battles being lost via the electric telegraph. With the invention of the railroads that were invented for use in the military one of the impacts it had on other groups of people was that the quartermasters, who were in charge of the railroads had grown to over 100,000 workers. The electric telegraph assisted generals by relaying messages that normally would take days instantly. This allowed the generals to know the status of battles and troops much quicker and allowed for reinforcements to be …show more content…
Aircraft was now used to drop bombs on enemies and well as for surveillance purposes. Until World War II battleships were the common ship used for naval battles. By World War II aircraft carriers were used and naval battles were no longer fought with the enemy seeing each other. Instead battles were fought by aircraft dropping bombs on enemy’s aircraft carriers. Radar was also used in aircraft in the form of placing a radar in a bomb so that when a bomb reached a specific distance the bomb could detonate. Radars were also used in aircraft and on ships to detect where other ships and aircraft were. One major impact that technology had on wars was the advancement of medicine. Soldiers were no longer dying from disease in the battlefield which allowed for more fighting to be done. The most important technological invention was the discovery of nuclear fission and the invention of the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb is the most powerful bomb ever dropped and the threat of another one being dropped is the still prevalent today. In the aftermath of World War II, the military research and development took two different courses. One of the courses was with the advancement of nuclear weapons and the other course was with the increasing capacity and improvement of conventional weapons. Now more than ever, nuclear scientists were now more in demand than ever before both in the United States and around the world

Radar was used a lot back in modern wars, mostly on ships for purposes like to avoid ship collision and to be able to find where the other boat and any other miscellaneous objects where and to either a. have the element of surprise or b. to avoid. Radar can also be used in the air, fighting while in flight can be even more dangerous than fighting by land or by the sea, but with the use of radar, planes can use antennas to detect other enemy airplanes, they might also have them in modern day airports to help the pilot find the landing strip while in the air, the radar will send transmitted information to the pilot that will help them prepare to land.…

The armies had to find a new way to transport supplies and weapons to allies conveniently. A solution that they came up with was the railroad. Steam trains were made and railroads were constructed across the routes of supplies being delivered. The railroad was much quicker and more effective then horses and could hold more people and get there about as fast. During the war, Britain especially used boats to transport their goods along the English channel they were protected in convoys and used sonar to detect any enemy…

The Union used many weapons in the Civil War. Among these, the most popular was the Model 1861 Springfield Musket, manufactured in the North for $15 to $20 to the government at The Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Of all of the technological advances made by the time of the Civil War, the rifle had the biggest and best impact. The rifle was made much sooner than the Civil War. It was used as a piece of limited numbers and typically by specific troops in the midst of the Revolutionary War. At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861 both sides were still essentially using the old smooth-bore muskets. These muskets were not correct and did not have a long range. The weapon had a smooth barrel which used a round lead ball as ammunition. Right when given up the lead ball would bounce around inside the barrel. This made for inaccurate shots . After the Civil War had begun mass producing rifles instead of the old smooth-bore muskets.Rifles were a far superior…

These natural features could also be used as a strategy for transportation. As a general I would favor usage of rivers and streams to transport soldiers and their supplies as opposed to railroad transportation. This is because river transportation was less likely to come under attack than railroads. This was the strategy used by Union generals for transportation which the confederates hadn’t discovered.…

The American Civil War was probably the most important period of arms development in history. The Civil War was appropriately called "the last of the ancient wars and first of the modern wars”. This was because many revolutionary breakthroughs occurred in this war, yet the military still relied on some of its old weapons and techniques. In this report, I will elaborate on some of the guns and ammunition used during the civil wars. I feel that the weapons are the most important part of a war.…

The gunpowder revolution saw many advancements beginning in the mid-fifteenth century. With the French invasion of Italy in 1494, France demonstrated that the exploitation and advancement of a technology could give one side an extreme advantage over the side which did not advance as quickly. France developed lighter and more mobile cannons, made from bronze, with handles on the sides that allowed them to be mounted to horse-drawn carts. These cannons could be easily traversed up or down, right or left, allowing for better aiming techniques. The French army also developed better propellant and ammunition by concentrating gunpowder, first introduced to Europe in the thirteenth century, through a process known as “corning.”…

American techno-scientific innovations were treated as extremely powerful components during the World War II and most of their undertakings were not subject to disclosure. The dramatic “high-tech” sector was instrumental in fighting during World War II. For example, a project known as Manhattan was launched to help in the creation of atomic weapons. The Manhattan project was both a direct and massive result of a stunning technological and scientific breakthrough. This project contributed to the administration of nuclear chain reaction through a team of scientists in various universities in 1942. Following a direction by the US Army and other several private contractors, engineers, scientists, and developers joined hand to build nationwide complex of laboratories. These laboratories carried various test to help them manufacture atomic fuels and also in fabrication of atomic weapons. Through this network, various…

One of the most important things the Civil War was known for was the advanced weaponry that was used during battles. The Union and Confederacy made many different types of weapons which helped them have an advantage against each other. A soldier from the South remembers, "I had shot one hundred and twenty times that day. My gun became so hot that frequently the powder would flash before I could ram home the ball, and I had frequently to exchange my gun for that of a dead comrade" ("Small Arms of the Civil"). Weapons played a major role in the battles of the Civil War. Due to more advanced weaponry, the Union won the Civil War.…

During the war, 15,000 miles of telegraph cable was laid purely for military purposes. President Lincoln would regularly visit the Telegraph Office to get the latest news. When Lincoln arrived for his inauguration in 1861 there was not even a telegraph line to the War Department, much less the White House. Storm clouds were brewing, but when the US Army wanted to send a telegram they did like everyone else. Here, as well, the Confederate army was at a disadvantage. The Civil War was the first war to use railroads, encouraged by President Lincoln who understood how vital they were for moving men and supplies. The North had a distinct advantage, with superior infrastructure better equipment and their own locomotive factory. Whereas the South had just 9,000 miles of track and had converted its locomotive. The trains allowed generals to move their soldiers, supplies and armaments to where they were most needed. Rail centers and railroad infrastructure soon became targets for attack. While the South's rail system was weak, they were the first to use trains to their advantage, transporting supplies and soldiers to vital areas. The railroad owners more concerned with how much they could charge, than how quickly they could fix the…
